Is this supposed to be normal (possible ADSL line issues)?

So for the whole year I've been having ADSL re-synch troubles and I've reported it to Telkom numerous times. While I'm waiting for something from their side after bugging them again this week, I went to check my modem's connection status and found these:

Connection Status Connected
Us Rate (Kbps) 128
Ds Rate (Kbps) 381
US Margin -18
DS Margin 5
Trained Modulation ADSL_2plus
LOS Errors 0
DS Line Attenuation 43
US Line Attenuation 32
Peak Cell Rate 301 cells per sec
CRC Rx Fast 830
CRC Tx Fast 8
CRC Rx Interleaved 0
CRC Tx Interleaved 0
Path Mode Fast Path
DSL Statistics

Near End F4 Loop Back Count 0
Near End F5 Loop Back Count 0

Is there anything that indicates what kind of problem I have with my line? That minus figure can't be good, can it? :P

wow! Something is terribly rotten. Your downstream should be 384 not 381. And the minus is not gewd at all. If you have little or no noise margin then that indicates your line has noise or other interference on it. It could also be a faulty fax machine thats been hit by lighting and isint completely stukkend. The best noise margin is 30db, the lower your margin the worse it is. And judging by yours, thats why your adsl isint performing.

Change your modulation mode from ADSL2+ to G.Dmt.

That might not be enough though.

Line Attenuation looks pretty horrid as well, test with only the router (no phone, fax, splitter, or filter) connected to the wall. if things get better one of those other devices are suspect. oh by the way, do you hear static when you pick up the phone, and do you have a home alarm?

I have tried removing everything except the router, but Line Attenuation remains the same. And you're right, one of our phones does have a lot of static when we pick it up. But we don't have a home alarm.

If your home phone has lots of static on it, then report that first.

So far I've always reported my ADSL problems as telephone/voice problems, because both times my telephone line was completely dead :)

See if you can change the modulation on your ADSL router from ADSL2+ to G.Dmt, but I think it'll still have issues until that static noise issue has been resolved.

It's the static on the line that is causing the CRC errors. Probably a loose connection somewhere.

Is that caused by the phone or the line?

The line.
Unfortunately the problem could be anywhere... from inside your house, to outside on the poles.

When my line had a bad static problem, it took several techies, before a competent one decided to check all the connections on every pole leading to my house... until he found the place on a pole a few houses up where some previous techie had not properly secured the wires. >.<
This was after he had run a new cable from the pole to my house.

Haven't had any trouble since he fixed it.

Okay, I'm not a techie so all those numbers are telling me exactly zilch. I just looked up the connection status on my duoPlus 300WR. Anything out of the ordinary?

Modem Status

Connection Status Connected
Us Rate (Kbps) 512
Ds Rate (Kbps) 5021
US Margin 11
DS Margin 30
Trained Modulation ADSL_2plus
LOS Errors 0
DS Line Attenuation 30
US Line Attenuation 14
Peak Cell Rate 1207 cells per sec
CRC Rx Fast 14
CRC Tx Fast 42
CRC Rx Interleaved 0
CRC Tx Interleaved 0

Pada, I was already on 10MB, realistically syncing at 8. But then in October the Dslam went BOOM! and since then it's getting worse and worse. I just thought if maybe my router is also to blame.

It could very well be your modem, because your upstream SNR margin is quite low in comparison with your downstream one, meaning that you can easily increase your download rate to 8Mbps, but you HAVE TO keep your upload rate at 512kbps. If you don't keep your upload rate fixed, then you will experience connectivity issues!

Okay, Telkom has been working on this problem of mine. First they worked at the exchange, then a technician came along and tested the connections from my house to the poles. He couldn't find anything wrong, and he also had a specialist in Cape Town test my line. The specialist said my line was 100% fine, and they had changed the line to be more efficient and downgraded it from being able to be used by 2Meg and 4Meg lines. All the tests the technician did shows my line has no problems and no noise.

And yet the desyncs continue on both my routers and a third one another Telkom technician had let me borrow. I'm really at a loss now. Any ideas?

Maybe post your:
  • Distance to exchange
  • Line Stats

Okay, according to the technician the distance to the exchange is about 2 or 3 kilometres away.

Here's my stats:

Connection Status Connected
Us Rate (Kbps) 128
Ds Rate (Kbps) 381
US Margin 11
DS Margin 7
Trained Modulation ADSL_2plus
LOS Errors 0
DS Line Attenuation 43
US Line Attenuation 31
Peak Cell Rate 301 cells per sec
CRC Rx Fast 12
CRC Tx Fast 0
CRC Rx Interleaved 0
CRC Tx Interleaved 0
Path Mode Fast Path

damn my line works fine 43 line attenuation , i do have 33 noise snr which is good .

maybe the cabling in the home, could be wrong something there.

Do you know to which exchange(area/name) you are connecting to?

The noise on my line would drop to horrible levels at random intervals, like last night somewhere around 6pm all just went south and the Noise went below 6 and just stayed there for 1-2 hours.

Phoned telkom and had the port reset, still no luck after some time we logged a fault for a Techy to come check out the line and hopefully maybe resolve the issue.
