I've been at one company for 5 years - and 4.5 years of those, things have been alright and I quite enjoyed it.

I don't get paid much, but I justified this by the amount of work I actually did ... not too much. However the last 6 months have been insane and I'm cracking. From the minute I briskly walk to my desk, I sit down and I'm 200 doing 200wpm until day end ....

I have very little time to do anything - I don't take lunch and the work is to much even at the pace I'm going at. There's no 'how was your weekend?' or small talk with colleagues ... it's unbearable

I chatted to a friend and she says 'um. That's how work is ... ?'

Is it?
Am I expecting too much by speaking to a colleague?

I have some days that are like this, but not all the time, but you can't really complain can you? Your there to work right?

Go look at how active I was 6 months back to recently .... I hardly have to open Internet :/

Anyway - I'm getting to the point where I give less of a **** than I used to. My sanity comes first

Do you only work Monday to Friday? what hours?

I think it is not healthy if there is not a fair balance. Although being busy is good, there must be time to joke around and the like.

Have you told your employer about this? They should be more concerned than you.

200wpm??!! That could be a world record!!

I was being sarcastic ;)

If I had a keyboard, I'd demonstrate the sound ... all while looking at others laughing, joking etc I think it's VERY unfair.

Normal 8-5 Mon - Friday job ... internal account manager at IT distribution. I'm looking at a job atm though - just was a little upsetting to hear that perhaps all jobs are like that. I also think a little bit of balance is needed

All jobs are not like that.

Everyone has bad days, but not every day should be one.

almost any company in today's world will squeeze maximum amount of work out of you for the minimal amount of money....it is all about the $$$ for them at the end of the day

You didn't mention this in your OP, or I read it only half arsed, this changes everything for me, from your OP you made it sound like you company was maybe working towards some kind of deadline and that everyone's workload increased, but seeing that your the only one that has to work your asss off, I would also say its unfair, and NO this is not how a job is, at my job either everyone in the department is working hard (deadlines) or everyone is taking it easy

If you are not enjoying work and you are skilled labour. Move on up.

Have you spoken to your supervisor/manager/boss about this state of affairs ?

Work is not always fun or exciting. We are currently busy analysing a lot of laws for a client and it is SOUL-DESTROYINGLY BORING!! But what can I do? This is our assignment and I will have to sit in front of the PC until it is done!

every job your bound to get busy, its just how the cookie crumbles! but with regards to colleagues, not everyone is all happy chappie all the time but its also about the effort you put into it! Make little jokes, offer to make coffee for someone when you go grab for urself and maybe sugest after work drinks... this breaks the ice and lightens the mood in the office and you will soon find people make an effort for you!
If your unhappy with the work load, ask for an increase or an assistant then justify it to your manager. You wont get anything if you dont ask!

One of these days i'm going to apply for a tech journo position at myBB. Promise. :)

You're paid to be productive. During the time in which you are expected to be in your seat you work as hard as you are required to. If you don't like that arrangement, you can find different work. I'm sorry it's not like you're being exploited here.
