Hey guys - thought I'd stat a new thread on this as it basically ties a large majority of resellers in to one pot. This is regarding the IS Uncapped Basic accounts and not the other IS per GB accounts that are classed as uncapped.

OK guys - we've just got off a conference call with IS. They have said several things which are very heartening and what appear to be very honest.

- They have admitted that the service is not as good as it could be.
- They are now internally committed to the Uncapped Basic product and are determined to give a far superior service to other competitive options.
- They have upgraded their IPC 4 times in the last month, however are doing a significant upgrade now, to cover the future uptake.
- They are provisioning a lot more international bandwith with the same mentality. There is an up to 5 week lead time on this... might be quicker though.
- They will continue to shape the usual 'abusive protocols/downloads' but the remaining will not be (they could not yet enlighten too much on this).
- The service will remain a 24/7 shapped 'truely' uncapped service.

A few other minor points were discussed, however, what you should take away from this is that it seems that we've won the day as well as we could expect.

The shaping on the p2p, newsgroups, file-sharing downloads is yet to be understood, however, we should be able to expect that the comparative 200GB, 30GB etc.etc. abusive caps imposed by the other uncapped products will never be in place. So... we am hoping to see the IPC improvents shortly and the international improvements throughout May. I do believe that the IPC upgrades will solve a LOT of the issues, however, we will still have some Telkom issues to deal with.

Congratulations guys.
Although, I am celebrating early, I do believe that we have won a major victory and well done to IS for turning themselves around. The proof will indeed be in the final look and feel of the account, however, in previous times, when IS commit to a product like this... they really do what they say they will.

P.S. So still keep us in touch with your service quality and we can monitor the improvements as they arise. However soon, I'm also going to start bugging you lot to tell all your friends to use our ADSL/VoIP services :D... which also allows us to re-start all of our developments to amalgmate it all.

Thanks for the feedback ppedrick, we know that you have been listening a lot. I will wait and see how this service will perform before signing up assuming that price level will stay similar!

Completely agreed... there is no point signing up for a service that has been proven to be sub-standard until you know it's up to speed (no pun intended! :D)

What I wanted to point out though was that we do now have a solid commitment from the largest network/'regional Tier 1' company in the marketplace. Which is great news and has definitely set the new South African internet market on a course that can not be turned back... only improved on!

Price levels will indeed remain the same.

I always get enlightened when reading posts from Mr Pedrick, so hats off to you sir. All the best and today is definitely a day to be remembered. Way to go IS.

I was considering if I should go from Axxess to M-Web next month but if this is the case.... maybe give them some time to get better? Using torrentflux I am able to atleast get what I got before and I can stream YouTube (with some buffering)... can stream radio... but gaming is a no no.

If i ever went back to IS, it would DEFNITELY be with Imagine. ppedricks' feedback and commitment to the users / general people on myBroadband has been fantastic!!! He was quick to admit fault and never tried to BS anyone, thanks for fighting the fight for us man!

I currently have two 4mbps Imagine / IS Basic accounts to test the service out for both home and office use. The main issues I've had thus far is when I need to do downloads from the office (generally ftp or scp) I've only been getting 30K/s to 50K/s even on our local servers and at home I only seem to get full speed after midnight.

Based on this feedback I'm happy to extend the testing for another month or so to see how it improves.

Thanks for keeping us all in the loop ppedrick.

Wow - thanks guys.
Nice to know that we're appreciated but more importantly that we have a new and exciting future for ADSL in a country that desperately needs it!
Also... feel free to call me Peter... I would prefer it to Mr Pedrick! :D

I have a quick question. I am able to login to the users.isdsl.net page with my account. If I am able to do this am I right in assuming that Axxess is reselling a complete product from IS?

i.e they do not have the same problem the likes of Afrihost and SAOL have(had in the latter). Axxess buys the product the same way IS sell the 30GB Local Only accounts etc. If a person went over the usage then the ISP isnt charged but that is up to Internet Solutions discretion etc.

So my end question is IS is then the one doing contention and capping and worrying about exessive usage and not the ISP right?

I know with some providers you cant login to the users.isdsl.net - I assume then its still an IS product (if they reselling IS), but they have more control over that bandwidth via IP Connect of some sorts or something similar.

Am I right with assuming the above?

Yes. Its all controlled by IS if you can log in @ IS usage stats.

Hey MrG

Axxess is indeed, like Imagine, reselling the IS Uncapped Basic account. Unfortunately right now, IS have not allowed us to link computers and so you have to login through user.isdsl.net... we assume that this will change at some point so you can benefit from your favourite reseller's control panel... however the product will always be under IS's control and ownership. I think this has been the confusion people have had in the past. The reseller's control panel does make you think that you're buying their product and not IS's... however, 9 times out of 10 you are not. Therefore, you should always get to the bottom of this and chose your reseller on their price and service level. Reseller transparency moving forward should really be demanded by the comsumer to allow them to understand which products theya re actualy buying.

The IS Basic Uncapped product is different from SAOL (who I beleive had their own IPC etc) and Afrihost/MyISP who are buying 'per GB' from IS and then shaping and throttling the accounts themselves. Hence the capping/throttling/shaping issues on their uncapped accounts. This is the problem with the lack of transparency.

IS completely manage the IS Uncapped Basic accounts. There is no cap on the product but it is shaped 24/7 for certain protocols/download types.

- Some providers are selling you this product without giving you access to the IS login.
- Some providers are overbranding it as their own, which must be confusing.
- 'IS backbone' does not always mean the IS Uncapped Basic account so you need to be clear.

I think that the rule of thumb here is that if the reseller can not clearly state which product they are selling you then you shouldn't buy it... or face the consequences.
Until we can cause a change whereby the reseller industry finally puts it hands up and gives you the clarity so you can compare products and chose what you buy then it will always be a bit confusing.

Right now I think it's the big 'win' that MWeb have. You might love them or hate them but its very clear what you're getting.

However, it's one of the things I'm wanting to help alter with IS and one of the reasons why we will never over-brand another company's product in this area and are encouraging the other reselelrs to do the same.

Thanks for the in-depth reply there ppedrick. The above is spot on with what I understood and I am glad you were able to confirm it for me.

Thanks and I agree with what you are saying, it will help a great deal for resellers to provide transparency.

Thanks ppedrick! Unfortunately my speed at the moment is below 10kbps though :(
