Is using a microwave wrong?

If I had purchased my R80 steak, with the purpose of braaing that meat, then I would expect that the meat be properly sealed on a hot fire and then heated quickly to medium-rare, and then removed and immediately eaten while still fire-hot.

I would be extremely upset if somebody threw it in a microwave and completely ruined the sealing-in process.

But, chicken, you actually need a different fire for chicken, a meat fire is not a good fire for the slow-cooking requirement of chicken. I would have no problem with nuking chicken, but, then again, that's not braaing, and the chicken loses the opportunity to develop that deep smoked taste.

Side note: Why on earth do people insist on bringing chicken kebabs to a braai? They're absolutely impossible to turn. If I end up forced to braai somebody else's kebabs, unfortunately, somehow, at least 70% of the floppy meat on a stick is going to either end up in the fire or donated to the braai committee.

Another BIG NO NO.

Don't ever braai someone else's meat. If you are the host you provide the braai and the fire. You don't even braai someone else's meat. Unless it's a female ofc and she asks you. Or if you provide all the meat.

That is the only 2 exclusions :)

What happened to our braai tradition? No one know the rules anymore?

I usually microwave the meat for 5mins on high, esp chicken and then put it on the bbq. Makes sure its done properly when i take it off.

 Even I can braai chicken until done, inside and out, and still be juicy, without taking it near a microwave!

Oh no - all your efforts led to naught :(

Turning sosaties is just technique and some decent tongs.

Do you guys stand in line to use the braai then? How does it work.

I'm happy with the host braaing, if he step away for something another person will take over but I only turn the meat 4 times and thats it. If you bring chicken to a braai you are on your own and can braai it yourself. wtf is up with people bringing chicken to a braai anyway?

Depending on the size of the braai. I have a built in one and 2 people can braai their meat at once. We're usually 4 groups of people so 2 at a time. While all 4 of us stand at the braai while the meat is being braai'd.

The meat which is done is then placed in the tray above the braai to keep it warm. Once done we all dish up and CHOW :p

But if you have one of those "drum" braais then surely 4 people can braai at once.

The free for all is fine for the amateur - they need to learn somehow - but I'm happy letting the most experienced person do the job. That way everything is done in the right order and no one is left trying to cook on a dead fire.

Do gas braais taste good too? been thinking of getting one for the patio. the normal braai has passed its usage date.

I don't belive in gas... it doesn`t create such a good atmosphere, and the smokey wood taste is not there. Personal preference though

Cant say how they taste but I've used them to cook with.

Contentious issue but I will say they serve their purpose admirably.

Nah, they are convenient but the food does not taste the same. Wood/charcoal is the way to go for flavour.

My mate moved into a new place a while back and it has a fancy built-in gas braai. He used the thing twice (while we were there) and eventually decided fsckit and went out to buy a weber for the balcony instead.

I would not buy a gas braai, it just does not taste the same I'm afraid.

Gas stove for the kitchen however is #1 !!!
