I have one flaw with my AV. Panda Cloud. I have to stop it when I do installations or transfers (copy etc.) since it really slows down my system.

Other than that I am happy to use it.

Why are people trolls when they have a difference of opinion?

I have been in the IT Business for close to 15 years and I haven't had a pleasant experience with any Symantec AV product.

Quoting PCMag articles doesn't build your case. We have real world experience as to how Symantec influences Desktops, Laptops and Servers alike. Don't even get me started on the details.

You're being trolls by moaning about an AV product you haven't used in 15 years...
Have a difference of opinion, but why talk down on a product you haven't tested yourself?
I Have used Norton AV on many client machines and decided to run it on my OWN home machine, and never once in the last 3 years (Since Norton 2010) have i had an issue at all.
I Started my first post by saying the older Norton (Then called Symantec) AV products were shocking, but since the release of the 2010 product it gets better every year...

Quoting a reliable source, who have done the testing THEMSELVES, under real-world conditions isn't pertinent to my case? How do you figure that considering this entire thread is based on people's experiences with AV products?
Please don't forget that this thread is not about Corporate situations, and i'm sure that the Server products that Symantec release are just as good as the stand-alone products, although i have not had any experience with them since the 2010 version release.

My point still stands, that Norton AV 2012 (Although it's not free, as the Thread heading states), is still rated better than MSSE, and any other FREE AV on the market...

Im not acting like a know-it-all, im purely stating the facts, making people aware of the benefit of using a paid-for AV, which is highly rated by international sources.

Everyone get's what? That you're insinuating that PCMAG.com did a good review because Symantec are an income source for them?
Why does MYBB not do good reviews (And they do reviews, on my side of the Internet) for telkom, considering telkom buy advertising from them?
 
No AV product is perfect Ben Dover. If you are happy using Norton then that's fine. I don't.

WHAT! Is PC Mag your benchmark? Or perhaps your magazine? :erm: Symantec products SUCK, AVG used to be awesome up until version 9, Trend as well...but os far MSE does it for me. You're more than welcome to use your precious Symantec crap.

The OP is about FREE anti-virus programs. There is no need for any of us to bring in our favourite paid-for programmes as that deflects the OP. Windows Secrets and Fred Langa have often reviewed paid/commercial versions, and of course the list is different.

Just saying that Fred Langa (now at Windows Secrets) has an impeccable record of fairness and reason, with immense practical experience -- and he's been in the industry longer than most of us, and is an acknowledged expert. He's written for InformationWeek for the past three centuries, and his bona fides and impartiality are beyond reproach. I haven't seen MyBB do an AV review. Neither Telkom, for that matter.

Which one is actually better?

MSE or Avast? I have been using Avast for the last 3 years, If i jump to MSE will it offer:

1. Better startup and shutdown times compared to Avast
2. The same or better protection than Avast

I Don't personally read PCMAG, but yes, it's a benchmark, what are you basing your results on? Experience? Sure, but there's more to software testing than the handful of computers you've installed MSSE on...

Bottom line, Norton will be better than any free AV, that's why they're free.

Flipside of the coin is that I find your whle attitude pretty hillarious. Everyone not agreeing with you is trolling. I consider YOU a troll for flaming everyone that does not like Symantec. And I can assure you I have NOT installed MSE on a mere handfull of machines. At work we have FINALLY switched from Symantec to Microsoft ForeFront Endpoint Protection, MASSIVELY reducing network traffic and dramatically lowering the resources used by AV.There are also a couple of hundred PC's (not a mere handful) that has been upgraded from AVG and Panda and various other **** to MSE.

But you are more than welcome to continue paying for your product ;)
 
And no-one has yet posted the customary "Windows is a virus" troll-roll yet? Amazing!

I've used paid antivirus since the 90s, starting with Peter Norton's, then just about everyone else, including FPROT, Command (an fprot isotope) ... right up to Bit Defender, AVG paid, Kaspersky, NOD32 ... you name it. MSE is my first and only free av experience, and so far it's met expectations. And it's light.
 
Lol, pcmag recommends AVG/Avira as the best anti-virus :sick: That says it all. Just type "best free anti-virus into google" and open the 1st two results. Anyone who uses pcmag as a base is unfortunately very naive and ill-informed.
