ISnewserver Blazing speeds !!!

Erm is it just me or has the SAIX newsserver also taken a dump lately? When I started out I could download anything at full speed and like IS it's started to go downhill unless the content is "Cached".

It's not just you.

Is doesnt seem to cache anymore.. so you always get 5k no matter what.. i think they trying to give us a hint.

It's strange though because whenever I start up my news client, I get full speeds for a short while and then it drops to 5KBps or so. Also as some mentioned it spikes to full speed for a short while every now and then.

Are all IS users experiencing this or could this be isp related?

IS has become an absolute joke.
I wouldnt even bother with them anymore.

IS news server,arg!!!

Whats up with the freaking news server?I cant remember the last time i downloaded faster than 10KB/s. Everything i download is cached, or so it's reported on newshost.za.net And it's all new stuff, what a waist of time this news server is

those were the days ............. full speeds and stuffs

I emailed OpenWeb about the problem, and specially the slow speeds I've been getting from the News Server.

Well, their reply was :
Greetings

I'm on email duty today, but will tell you what i know.

Due to the popularity of the news server, the demand outstrips the supply.

We have asked IS whats up and the only conclusive info we can extract
was that they are building a new News server, and they didnt commit on
any ETA.

We're heard that many times.

Newshost has it's own forum for posting about "you know what and what else"...Use it...

lol - wonder what is going to be first

  • ISPs taking responsibility for the products they sell so that the customers enjoys its full potential.
  • Duke Nukem forever.
  • Cheap Adsl.
  • New News server.
  • Proper Uncapped.
  • Real fast adsl.
  • Neotel actually reselling.
  • Alternative to sgs.

So true .......

On the other hand... The news server has been largely responsible for a huge increase in IS accounts being sold. Economics 101 makes it sensible for IS to maintain/update/improve the server to retain their customers.

I hope it's Duke Nukem for ever, the other things won't happen.

Why? This is broadband site, IS is an ISP providing broadband access and the news server is part of IS' value added services. By posting news discussions on MyADSL all current and future users of IS and their news server will have one central place to search. There is nothing more frustrating than having to search 10 websites for the same thing - which is what you are advocating without justification.

Unless RPM or the other MODS ban discussions of anything news server related then let us discuss it here. Leave Newshost (which is great) for discussing other things like NZBs, cache retention and GrabIt etc.

Now back to the original post, the IS news server is terrible, it has been for a while and it will be for the foreseeable future. But this is where you and every other news IS server user has an incredible amount of power. Cancel all your IS local only accounts - switch to SAIX local only prepaid if have to. Make sure WA and OW understand why you are doing it. Once you have enough cancellations IS will sit up and take notice. Right now they are getting money for nothing with those local only accounts - as soon as it starts to affect their bottom line they will start addressing the problem - quickly.

Here is a rough calculation, 10 000 IS local only 30 gig account users (this is a guess) x R 130.00 per month = R 1 300 000 per month. If you get 3/4 of those users to cancel their accounts then the IS bean counters are going to give the technical department a kick up their @ss and a decent budget for upgrading the news server. Trust me they do not want to loose close to R 12 000 000 a year in revenue and they will do something to get you back or rather get your money back.

In case you are wondering, I canceled my IS local only 30gig account because of the news server.

Oh and another thing, according to my calculations you should not be able to reach your cap on an IS account using the news server - someone check my maths because I am not exactly Fermat.

60s * 60mins * 24hours * 30 avg days in a month = 2592000 seconds in a month
2592000 seconds * 10 bytes = 25920000 bytes you can download in a month
25920000 / 1024 = 25 312.50 megabytes
25312.50 / 1000 = 25.3125 gigabytes

So basically downloading at 10KB/s for a full month from the news server without interruption would still leave you 5 gigabytes short of your cap. Considering that the average speed is closer to around 6 - 7 KB/s using that figure the result would look even worse.

yeah, so true

why share? lets keep it a secret and feel all warm and fuzzy inside. after all, this is the purpose of life, to have fast downloads of "linux isos"

I do not see how airing your illegal downloads is benefiting anybody.

Sharing is giving up your own speed and data to help those looking for the things you have. Sharing is not openly declaring your source.

There's only so many leechers a source can take. I'm really not sure what people here expected to happen. Point leechers directly to a source and you're cutting out the middle tier, a tier we are now sorely missing.
