... how efficient government is when they have to TAKE from us, as opposed to when they have to GIVE to us?

We read about how their skills are depleted, capacity is sorely lacking and the brain drain left them powerless.

Yet they manage to do the following -

1. At EXACTLY 10:00 every morning, that useless Eskom manages to switch off the power. They indicate that it will be restored at 14:00 in the afternoons, yet they only only manage to flip the switch somewhere between 14:15 and 14:30.

2. SARS HOUNDS us over taxes that are due. They call my bf at least once every two weeks over taxes that he is paying off in terms of an agreement with them. They insist that it must be paid on the exact due date. However, he has been waiting for more than 6 months now for them to finalise his latest assessment.

I do not believe in that 'we lack skils and expertise' excuse. If that was the case, how can they TAKE with such efficiency, yet not GIVE when it is due?

I think that they DISREGARD taxpayers and this lack of respect shows in how they treat people.

At least we have a high standard of living ... /Borat NOT.

@ Blunomore, I can't say I agree with your sentiments.

We have been trying to get a dependable schedule from Eskom regarding the loadshedding, and this week so far, it has been spot on. This allows us to plan around the outages and try to keep productivity up.

As for the taxes thing, pay it on time and the right amounts, you never hear a peep from SARS. :D

You mean your power gets cut and you are only to happy that ESKOM tells you exactly when it will happen? That in itself says that we accept and condone their failure. There were not supposed to be power cuts to begin with.

JMO.

In a strange way, yes, I'm happy to know when the power cuts will happen. As this the reality of doing business in SA and we now need to manage our risk exposure to the power cuts. We have SLA's to maintain and my customers do not give a flying **** whether the lights were out, they want the job done.

Of course I am also happy to know when power will be out. The saying goes: "She who fails to plan, plan to fail ... "

But I am also aware that we are like the frog in the pot and the water is getting warmer ever so slowly ...

I would tend to agree, IF nothing was being done to fix the situation. However overdue the measures are, something is being done.

Same here. I run computer simulations that take days to solve. I can minimize the time loss if I know roughly when will a power failure happen.

Our customers also don't give a ***** about Eskom excuses. Eskom is actually one of our clients. Luckily, we practically have no competition in our business. :D

I know exactly when my power is going to go off and come back on,its usually on time give or take 5min

I think all of us need electricity to do our jobs. My life sure is no different than yours.

However, I will not drop my standards and accept the situtation, just because a service provider - ESKOM - is not doing what I pay them to do.

Bleh.. On monday I got load shedded out of my damn house. Long story, anyway.. I had to sleep in the car in the middle of melville.. wtf

When load shedding hits me, im either locked in or locked out of my house.
Either way I also have to leave my car outside.. Unacceptable in this country. Im close to strapping bombs to my person and killing Eskom employees just because..

Yes, something is being done, they are going to take more money from us to keep the BEE/AA a-wipes in place (pocketing their bonuses) while they pay independent consultants to perform the work.

I guarantee you'll not see one of the people responsible for the current sorry state of the power generating industry lose their job - it is greed, incompetence, poor work ethic, under qualified and a sick attitude of "entitlement" that is the main problem, not wet coal, and unforeseen technical hitches.

I would assume you get locked out becuase of your gate? If so, does it have no manual operation?

Or maybe you have some electricity dependant lock? :p
