Isn't TELKOM the greatest ever?

My trusty Conexant (Mecer) router kicked the bucket on Wednesday night.

Imagine my frustration.

I bought that one 2 years ago for 300 odd bucks because I didn't want to commit to a 24 month contract with TELKOM even though I would have got a router for free.

But by now I've realized that come hell or high water I will always scrape enough together each month to have Internet so on Friday afternoon just before closing time (16:20) I walked into the Telkom shop, signed a 24 month contract, and five minutes later I walked out with a brand new router.

I got home and 2 minutes later I were online again.

Frikkin A!

Good one Picard, give praise where and when it is earned. Telkom has its good points as well.

Let me get this straight. You're too cheap to buy your own quality router, so you walked into a Telkom shop, signed a 24 month contract (which nobody signs anymore unless they're a sucker), and walked out of there with a crappy cheap Telkom-branded router. And you call this great service? I call it being conned.

They must have seen you coming from a mile away! I can only imagine what they said behind your back as you left the shop...

Let me get this straight. You mean to say that I should fork out nigh (if not over) a thousand bucks to buy a router that will do the same job as a telkom endorsed one and with another ISP that uses the same infrastructure as Telkom (Telkom's), for normal home use ...?

I honestly cannot understand you guys. The op use words like "scrape" money together, etc, and you flame him for signing up with a 24 month contract. You don't know what his circumstances are.
Maybe you tycoons can afford to to buy routers at high prices, maybe he can't, I don't know. How many of you are just out of contract, because the 2 year period lapsed? How many of you are using Telkom and Afrihost.
The op took a decision and are happy with the service he received.
So he is bounded to a contract for 24 months. Is that a shootable offence? No! Will he regret it in 6 months or so? Possibly, but he won't want to kill himself if he loose out on a cheaper bandwidth deal.
So get real.

There are routers that go for MUCH cheaper :)

Possibly, but with all the promised action that is supposed to happen in the next few months signing a 24 month contract for a router is utter madness! So you save a few pennies now but you'll feel the burn for months/years to come

I live in a small rural town. If I had to wait for another "cheap" router I would've had to wait another week at leas and had to search alot.

Anyhow I would have still paid the cost of the router MORE than I do pay now because I still would be with Telkom 24 months down the line.

So in effect I paid nothing for their router. How good is that as a deal.

Speaking of ISPs I do have an account registered with Axxess that I use sometimes.

Thanks for the reminder... I must go and renew my contract and claim a new modem/router as well!!!

HAHA!!! 24 month contract just to get a new router! MAN! You should've asked me, I could've organised one for you CHEAP! hahahah.

enjoy the raping for 24 months!

I work for a IT company, so we have quite a few ADSL routers (non wireless) lying around.
Not sure how much we sell them for, but having said that, since they are 2nd hand (clients who went bang had to give equipment back) they do work etc and yeah, cheaper than buying a new one and / or taking out a new contract.

Yep, telkom have some really good service, LOl I got my line ADSL ready in 1 week, but it took Nashua 3 weeks to get my router and activate my net

He is STUCK into a 24 month contract no matter what happens...there is gonna be a lot of movement in the ADSL market over the next 3/4 months and he's gonna be stuck on a *** package whereas those of us who pay on a month to month basis can move around to take advantage of the newer packages. Hell, I already have :D ;)

Anyway he still has to play telkom for his line so, he just pays themn a bit more for cap
