ISPs and iOS shaping, your thoughts?

Yeah I'm sorry I don't buy it! I stream more than that a night! So what the ISP's are saying is that they can't manage their users doing more than 2GB of traffic a night??

Also Apple throttled the downloads on their side to about 150kb/s per file. This I got from friends downloading via different ISP's.

I magically got max speeds on CW after 11pm...

But hey:
THE STREAMS MUST FLOW!
ITS DEM USERS!

150kb/s limit? Just tested it now and there is no such limit it seems.

Hmmm.... back to the net neutrality debate?

Just be responsible there son, you know, you are slowing us down...

Exactly what I was thinking! Why is the whole South African Apple client base with Afrihost? Because they have been terrible since last Tuesday non-stop!

I don't think the 150KB/s limit exists, I think he meant that the servers max the connections at 150KB/s because of the load of users.

FWIW Apple still uses Akamai to serve it's updates so they would have been local.

Yup, but it also depends which local Akamai nodes are being utilised by Apple, then also the routes the various ISP's take to the "closest" nodes. Lately I have noticed some ISP's being very slow with Akamai, but this is a whole other discussion.

In general, ISP’s using the iOS 8 update as an excuse is being a little low on their side, there is some daily “big” requests made which is delivered by Akamai, capacity wise it would had been expected.

I think I have figured it out. All isp's are just committing fraud.

They know they are over capacity but take on new customers punishing those that pay full price for poor service.

They do not invest profits in improving the network but instead spend money on social media supports teams that accomplish very little in terms of real improvements.

They shape things they say they don't and it is very hard to prove.

In the end we need to call a special investigative team to investigate all networks those acting unlawfully (aka selling a service they know they can not provide) should face imprisonment/fines and refunds for customers.

I am really in favor of government forcing telkom to invest a large percentage of profits into infrastructure... and if they don't they lose the company in interest of national security and development.

Youtube still buffers on 144p quality every 5 seconds, Axxess still blaming it on the IOS updates, getting 600kbps on a 4mbps line.

Weird, when Microsoft releases an update (and everyone I know has a Windows OS, and I'm pretty sure MS has a big market in SA), they don't do it locally, it's usually an international download.... and a couple of hundred megs for big service pack updates.

Why does the internet not grind to a halt when several million PC's need windows updates? Yet, with the handful of iOS users, all ISP's seem to be struggling? lol

Of course the silence on this matter is awesome; admission of guilt?

The ISP's should cache the Apple updates onto local servers.

[..]

I think it's just a lame excuse so that ISP's give people slower connections for a while and we pay for higher prices so they make more money.

The fact that it's local doesn't help with IPC capacity. According to wholesale business rules, you can't upgrade and downgrade IPC capacity in the same month, so it's not like an ISP can provision an extra 5Gbps of capacity for a week.

BTW., here is a graph of Software Updates vs. all other traffic for a large ISP:

Software_Updates_20140915-20140925_vvs.png

Software updates before iOS8 release peaked at 12% of total traffic. At 18h00 on 17 Sept, it spiked up to 18%, peaking that day at 23%. The next day it increased to peak at 31% of total network traffic. Yesterday, software updates was still running at 20% of total network traffic.

So no, this is not a lame excuse.

Users connecting on ISPs with Nightrider/NightSurfer type options should consider updating their devices in those times (so they don't get billed for the usage, as well as to reduce the impact on the network).

Apple shouldn't do anything. Users need to be more responsible for their own usage. I don't even use Fruity devices and I have been affected since the iOS 8 roll out.

The whole DSL system relies on users to pay for their own package and only use it at different times then other users. Million people trying to drink from one straw but if everyone would only take turns.

Didn't you read my second suggestion?

You should do a before and after of the fappening. Many one hand gold fish here.

The internet was unusable. We need apologies and compensation.

Telkom is squeezing bandwidth so tight on uncapped, this is likely to happen again. They aren't excatly opening floodgates now to compensate. Downloads are switched off again during the day.

Wrong thread.

False. Please read the updates in the other Telkom Internet-related threads. We were trying to allow *MORE* bandwidth for P2P for uncapped users on a vendor's recommendation. The problems we experienced in January however returned, so we had to re-instate strict shaping of P2P again to restore other services.

You are being quite vague, and I am being specific on what we are trying to accomplish.

Also, you are off-topic in this thread, and in other threads other forum users are characterising your posts as trolling. I don't think it is benefiting anyone for you to post in this thread at this stage, there are many other Telkom Internet-specfic threads where your trolling would be more effective.

I am still waiting for a PM from you with a ticket number I can look at regarding your problems ...
