ISPs and iOS shaping, your thoughts?

Hey ranger great to see you back :)

Just curious about the january thing mentioned. Were they IPC issues?

No, traffic management problem, where high priority traffic was being shaped, while low priority traffic was significantly higher than it should have been. The vendor supplied a work-around (which requires artificially limiting low priority traffic even when there is capacity to allow more). New features should have allowed us to remove this workaround, which is what we attempted on the weekend.

????

Wrong thread.

False. Please read the updates in the other Telkom Internet-related threads. We were trying to allow *MORE* bandwidth for P2P for uncapped users on a vendor's recommendation. The problems we experienced in January however returned, so we had to re-instate strict shaping of P2P again to restore other services.

You are being quite vague, and I am being specific on what we are trying to accomplish.

Also, you are off-topic in this thread, and in other threads other forum users are characterising your posts as trolling. I don't think it is benefiting anyone for you to post in this thread at this stage, there are many other Telkom Internet-specfic threads where your trolling would be more effective.

I am still waiting for a PM from you with a ticket number I can look at regarding your problems ...
Correct thread. You can name-call all day but the excuse used about iOS was not valid.

Send me your name and Telkom contact details and I will send you a PM with ticket.

Did you miss the graph?

It's quite obvious that the update caused more demand.

Weird, when Microsoft releases an update (and everyone I know has a Windows OS, and I'm pretty sure MS has a big market in SA), they don't do it locally, it's usually an international download.... and a couple of hundred megs for big service pack updates.

Why does the internet not grind to a halt when several million PC's need windows updates? Yet, with the handful of iOS users, all ISP's seem to be struggling? lol
Not all ISP's. During this problem I switched across to two different accounts and all worked.

My offer to you in the uncapped thread a few days ago was: send a mail to support at telkomsa dot net, PM me the ticket number, and I will have someone look at your ticket. Sorry, but corporate policies limit how much personal info I can disclose and still be useful here.

We could limit the impact to non-iOS users by shaping iTunes app store, but we believe in doing the minimum necessary to keep the internet as usable as possible, but providing incentives to users to be more considerate (e.g. NightSurfer).

Maybe said other providers are shaping iOS updates, or you used capped/unshaped accounts (which isn't an apples-to-apples comparison).

But, this is still off-topic.

I provided evidence debunking the claim that iOS8 has no/little impact on the network. Please go look in the internet, you will find many articles about the impact of iOS8 on networks in most countries.

Impact as in stopping browsing or making it a little slower? What we experienced was as much a stoppage as anything else. Name one other ISP in the world that reported user unable to browse.

Since Telkom ISP is concerned about the impact on the network from specific users, the minute it was found that iOS was causing a major problem they should have stopped any iOS downloads. That would make complete sense.

Of course the other measure it to ensure there is enough bandwidth so we don't notice singular events. Since the new 'policy' everything is far tighter, from which we now see another symptom.

You are confusing issues. I am referring to impact between 17 Sept and 19 Sept. I was able to browse and youtube, but youtube buffered a bit more than usual.

Only to those users not using iOS.

You are confusing policy with limitations. We tried to lift the policy on Saturday 20 Sept., do you want us to try it again?

But, again, this thread is about iOS8 shaping, and not ISP-specific issues, which belong on ISP-specific threads.

Still no PM from you with a ticket number for any of the issues you claim affect all users where other users on the thread in the same region on the same product can't reproduce ...

Can you guys please stop downloading your iOS updates. I'm struggling to get a restore ios 7.1 from apply via crystal web :erm:

I thought apple stopped signing anything below 8?

Yeah, but I want to rollback to 7.1 or 7.0 because of the 3g and reception issues seems to have creeped in with 7.1.1 and 7.1.2

The above was an overreaction. Hitting max speeds on IE / Other.

Sorry.

There is no internet sheriffs all is well, thank you Shaun.

Not really a problem if you do a downgrade without blobs or you have the signed blobs. Sadly I don't have the blobs since I never made them... not seeing myself going the 'shebang' route / exploit to downgrade hehe.
