IS's "uncapped"/threshhold packages

I was just thinking. For those who don't quite yet know, IS's "uncapped" accounts are all* becoming Express accounts (some say effective August, some already having problems; when is besides the point here) which means that each "uncapped" account has a threshold level of data usage (in a 10-day period), which once reached reduces the speed of the line to half of the original. Then if in the following 10 days the user uses less than a certain amount (varies between packages) then full line speed is restored.

Can these packages still be called uncapped accounts ?

EDIT: Correction -> * not all uncapepd accounts are being affected. Thanx matt156 for correction !

No account is truly uncapped. Even if you download at full speed 24/7 there is a ceiling to what you can download, which is effectively a cap determined by your line speed. Throttling the line speed by half reduces the effective cap by half.

If the problems reported this month are just "dns" problems (I'm skeptical), it will be interesting to see how accurately/zealously the system is enforced.

This is not quite true. Firstly, the IS Business uncapped ADSL packages (the ones with fixed IP addresses and required routers) are not changing. Secondly, IS's Express accounts have always had these limitations in their reseller's terms and conditions. It appears that IS is just enforcing the conditions now, probably due to network congestion.

I agree with you Gatecrasher, any uncapped account has an upper limit implied by physical constraints such as line speed (as you said). So I rate the name uncapped can still safely be used, perhaps it should be expanded to "uncapped threshold" accounts though, just to help the unsuspecting customer understand what they are really getting.

When they reduce the amount and speed you can download at to well below the constraints placed by you actual line speed it is still an artificial threshold - iow a cap.

So cap means an aritificial threshold ? I always thought it meant absence of a cap, with cap referring to un upper limit on data usage :confused: Seems I was wrong :o

Seeing as those use a dedicated router, VPN etc. are they limited in some other way through that setup?
 
I am really shocked to know IS is setting threhold for their "Uncapped" account:eek:
There is no such thing called threhold in the true "uncapped"!!!
why don't IS just named it the 15GB 384k capped or 30GB 512k capped for their express uncapped!!!(The true name of the uncapped):mad: This is a fraud action from my point of view...
IS is not trying to increase their bandwidths to better their product and services, all their think about is how to suck more cash from users' pockets!!!:mad:
 
yeah this uncapped story is BS!! :mad: ...cant be called uncapped with restrictions

accounts are the ones u are reffering to?
 
There will always be a play on words, however uncapped means no cap. So once IS begins to rate limit these accounts they can no longer be called uncapped. However our business uncapped remains uncapped and unshaped. I do believe that with the backlash of the ISP's and users and further upgrades on their network the thresholds will be increased. However these "Express uncapped accounts" are still cheaper per megabyte then any other account.

By some of the definition used here, iBurst could possibly market their products as uncapped.
 
It really is very sad and I feel we should have this looked at, the fact that the product carries the "uncapped" title in any way,shape or form would imply to any other part of the world that there is no restrictions placed on the account, how ever as it has so articulately been pointed out it does have restrictions very clearly demarcated. Even if it just gets them to remove the word uncapped as I feel that this is misleading in a huge way.
