It is called a Traffic Light!

If you've been exposed to traffic light (expat perhaps) then it would grate. Even an extended stay abroad might trigger it. However it's as normal as "braaivleis" to Saffas. (cue the barbecue argument)

No barbeque argument from me, a braai is a braai :)
But, hey, words like Traffic Lights and Traffic Circles have been around for quite some time...

Um, no... but most new cars do. :p

2ndly... They already have a name. It's called a traffic light.
Do you call everything that fits that criteria a robot?
(PC.. DVD machine.. Wife.. Satellite.. UPS.. )

If you're going to be pedantic, be consistent. It's "Secondly" ...

What ever happened to the decimal comma as in R1,50 (one Rand fifty)? I could swear that it used to be the standard in SA. Mind you, I prefer the decimal point. I also prefer traffic light. :p

And to make things more interesting, i sometimes call them Traffic Robots, especially the ones standing in the middle of road waving their arms ;)

I'm with the OP on this one - calling Traffic Lights, Robots, drives me nuts!!

"...and at the 2nd Robot, turn left"

"What!? You mean Traffic Light, right?"

"er...yes, sorry"

Yes even in Afrikaans: Robot ≠ Verkeerslig

Why would we have words like "Traffic Light" and Verkeerslig?

Can't have it both ways :p Either vote that local is lekker or say nay we must use the Queens tongue in all manner of phrase.

Braai = braai.
Robot = Robot.
Soccer = Soccer.

We are South africans not yanks nor pommies.

As has Robot...

and its the local dialect.... deal wif it..

ROFLMAO! :D

R1,500.00 OIK!

A Robot is a Robot is a Robot is a Robot is a Robot is a Robot is a Robot OIK!

Wow and i thought i was anal.

If you want to argue semantics we can't exactly go around calling a barbeque a braai then can we. What is a braai?

"Braai" is used by Afrikaners without two cents worth of English vocabulary. :D
/glares at JHB and the Freestate.
So sad how few people can properly speak two languages. It's not that difficult guys. ;)

No, the term braai is used by ALL South Africans.

I only use it in Afrikaans language setting.
But, then again I never invite English people for lunch/dinner.
Does that make me an illegal immigrant?

I am so tired of people referring to a Traffic Light as a Robot (In english and Afrikaans)
It's not a robot, as it doesn't move! (Unless some drunk student makes it move with his car)

finally someone brave enough to speak up.
