Good day All

Hope I have posted this in the right place. My SO has an degree in computer and information science and an honors degree in business systems. She is currently working in an entry level administrator basically creating user accounts and modifying users etc. This is leading her to "hate IT" which I know is not the case and is rather a case of frustration at what she is doing.

I wanted to find out if I could get some tips on which direction she could look or where to apply for a more rewarding job where she can develop her IT career. .

Will appreciate any suggestions/tips...

Thanks

Where are you situated? I might have something for her (experience/skills dependent)

IT means a hell of a lot of things.
What is she interested in? Which field?

She is interested in the following areas mainly:

1) Systems Design/ Architecture 2) Information Security 3)Software Quality Assurance 4) Computer Systems Analysis

Everyone starts at the bottom, but man! that is pretty much the very bottom.

Good luck in finding something else. If she's good, she won't have a problem getting an other job. Good IT personnel are in great demand.

How long has she been working?
You first do scut work in IT before you can really do stuff. No one walks out of varsity in to a Systems Architect/Design position.

But with her qualifications - that is a really bad use of her skill set. She's female, in IT and qualified - tell her to put her CV in the market immediately.

In the IT industry talent gets spotted very quickly. If you truly are talented and you've started at the bottom it won't be very long before your talent is spotted and you will rise very quickly. It also depends on your personality. The person needs to take responsibility for their own personal development and have the ability to spot and take on new opportunities. You can't just sit back and wait for things to happen!

Totally agree with your sentiments. She has been doing quite a few certifications recently which she has passed. So maybe needs a bit more of the same and a more ruthless attitude I guess.

She has put her CV on the usual suspects...PNet, careerweb etc. But I think that the CVs there just used for building up databases. She been working now 3 years...

3 years as a administrator? A woman in IT with a Masters degree? I'm going to be blunt here- but if she's black she'd be the trifecta of recruiting. Qualified with a great BEE score - IT would want her and HR would love her. Heck - the BEE score would be great in any case.
