It's time for Xbox 360 to adopt Blu-Ray

I don't care about blu ray, my 20 gig hdd is really tiny right now and I don't want to spend a fortune on a bigger drive.

Would be nice if it was cheaper, or you could save on an external drive.
That's my only xbox gripe.

If blu ray is needed or not for gaming is another argument on its own, all i'm saying is, MS must not bother waisting their time and money on blu ray tech for any Xbox console, be it a addon for the current console or included for the next "720" console, Majority of Xbox fanboys think blu ray is a waist of money and adds to much price to the console and has no benefit. like i said why give the customers something they clearly dont want.

Not quite true.

I personally don't see this massive need for BR games yet, as nothing much has developed over the past 3 or so years while we the PS3 has it. Perhaps had it actually demonstrated something in 2006 (or 2007, 2008 or 2009) then I'd be convinced of gaming BR benefits. Yea - in future may help - but then the new Xbox may be out and have a BR as well?

Churchill and IAP: Did you even bother reading the posts in the GoW3 thread?

Likewise, with Lost Planet 2, if they are hacking chunks of anything out it'll be non-core game assets, i.e. HD video or maybe even uncompressed audio. I repeat as I did in the GoW3 thread, neither console is powerful enough to support, at any decent framerate, the kind of core game assets (i.e. textures, models, maps etc) that would require Blu-Ray levels of storage capacity for an average length game.

Why are Iwojima's contributions, which make a hell of a lot of sense, always conveniently ignored?

I personally think Microsoft has got their timing impeccably correct. For 4.5 years no one has even been concerned with disc capacity. Even now it is debatable. Microsoft will bring out a higher storage capacity of some sort when it become the de facto standard, which is still a while off. So for now 2 x DVD 9 = 1 single layer BD which I hardly find unacceptable.

Oh, and we shouldn't bother with the GoW III press release, it is merely Sony propaganda since it is a Sony title. Lets see whether the development houses are complaining about having to take a little extra time to add compressed video and audio or whether this really is problem (at least for the next year or two).

Is this just going to devolve into another XBox 360 bashing thread or are we actually going to discuss the topic as posted by the OP?
I don't know. Are you going to quote someone prior to your post who is bashing the Xbox 360?

It's easier for certain individuals to ignore a factual explanation of things they clearly do not understand rather than engage me on the points I've tried to make. I do have a fairly decent amount of game dev knowledge due to a number of years of game mod development I was involved in some years back. While I do not claim to know everything I certainly know enough to reply to dubious claims about current gen games with some technical insight rather that just relying on what a company, with their own bias and agenda, tells me. :)

If you don't see it it's because you're probably in it. However, for the sake of keeping this thread on topic, namely optical disc storage sizes, I won't go there.

As I've tried to get through in my last few posts Blu-Ray is not essential for the current generation of consoles for various technical reasons. If higher capacity physical media is required for the next gen Xbox then by all means Blu-Ray (or an alternative) should be an option.

Good idea, the topic is ,Its time the Xbox should adopt blu-ray, so i'll start with my response,

I dont think its a good idea for MS to adopt BR for their consoles, why you ask, simple : 95% of Xbox owners dislike BR and think its a waste, so dont give Xbox owners something they dont want, I mean one of the reasons why the cutomer chose the Xbox is because MS dont force unwanted tech on the customers and MS give them choice.

Now, someone elses turn.

Should MS adopt blu -ray, yes or no

Who is honestly going to fork out extra to save themselves the 10 seconds it takes to get off their ass and change a disc?

When games start requiring 45GB of space then by all means start looking at BR. But for the next year or two, the current gen will survive just fine. BR is probably a given for the next gen Xbox, so what I really want for the next gen Xbox is backwards compatibility with 360 titles.

No. I do not require Blu-Ray movies nor have any games in this generation required the extra capacity of Blu-Ray in a single disc (for reasons I have explained several times)

Should games actually require it for the next generation of consoles then by all means Blu-Ray (or an alternative) should be included with the new Xbox "720".

No, I certainly won't buy one

My turn!
No, it would not be a good idea since this would alienate MS's core consumer base. While a generalisation, followers of the Xbox 360 do not need, nor require Blu-ray, or any type of bigger storage media since, quite frankly, if it can fit on 10 DVD's, what's the problem? Sure, you'd have to change the disk a couple of times, but really, who's so lazy so as to not get up 10 times for a couple of measly disc changes? Honestly, i don't care if it comes on 100 DVD's, i'm simply not that lazy. 1000, even...

Show us one post in this thread that said 10 discs are acceptable. Personally 2 or (max) 3 is fine for me - any more than that might be a bit of an issue. As said before, it probably won't be a problem this generation but next gen consoles will most certainly incorporate higher capacity media.

Or already does...;)

Well, i guess you can be glad that games like UC2, GOW3 and MGS4 didn't get ported to the 360 - pretty sure it would have shipped on more than 3 discs...

Interesting question, if you have a BD-ROM on your PC, can you see how much data is on a PS3 game disc?

Don't have a BD-ROM for my PC, but developers normally state how big their games are, ie GoW3 EU version takes up 40Gb of disc space.

But now is that its installation footprint or amount space needed for swapping etc?
