iTunes 11 release expected shortly

They need to hurry up. Was expecting this to be released already

Hope it's a fairly substantial upgrade

Its so nice to say I actually don't care, after over 5 years of using iTunes I have finally found a replacement that doesn't just do what iTunes does, but is actually better: MusicBee

I have tried so many different media players. iTunes is still the best.

I'm with Pooky here ('tho I am on a Mac). Tried just about every media player when I was still on Windows machines and iTunes worked best for me than and still does now.

I use iTunes purely as my music manager and to sync my iPods - have quite a large library (56 000 songs) and MANY smart playlists - run it on a fast laptop, but with all the smart playlists, it has over time become painfully slow, but at least does everything I need, so doubt if I will try anything else :)

Yeah, a lot of the consternation around itunes has really been around it's poor handling of improperly tagged pirated music. But once you have a perfectly tagged collection it works quite well. Obviously there are other annoyances like the way it handles syncing of foreign IOS devices and it's slowness, but as a music player it's solid - but not spectacularly. Hopefully the update takes it to a higher level.

It works fine but on windows its damn slow compared to similar applications.

It's not slow on my PC, and my PC is very old too.

I have tried other applications, iTunes is fairly slow to import and may take a few more seconds to start up, but once it has, it runs perfectly fine.

One gripe I do have is when it sorted my music folder collection it really screwed everything up.

before I import music (all mp3) I check it with MP3val and fix any errors in the mp3 file and after that I make sure that all tags are ID3v2.3 - if not, I clear the tag with mp3tag and rewrite the tag with iTunes - I also delete all the ALBUM ARTIST or COMPILATION tags (only use ARTIST tag, otherwise it stuffs your folders around)

how many songs have you got in your library and if you use smart playlists, how many are there?

It's the only way to do it. Itunes assumes all the music being imported into it was bought and is thus properly tagged. Without proper tagging it's a dogs breakfast.

The startup time annoys people. You don't have that problem on a mac.

I have 21000 songs.
Don't use Smart Playlists, never really seen how they would work in my favour.

I think that's why your speed is fine - smart playlists are very handy if most of your music is star rated and the genre's are properly set - it also allows you to not play your favourite music to regularly and risk getting tired of it - I have about 30 smart playlists and think that is what is slowing my iTunes down
