Don’t know too much about OS X, so hopefully this is not a stupid question.

A friend has a MacBook with OS X Mountain Lion and the latest version of iTunes. The problem is that iTunes will not open. Clicking on the icon only makes it bounce a couple of times but nothing more.

He has already installed the latest version of iTunes over the previous one. I suggested that he uninstalls it completely and then does a fresh install. He is reluctant due to concern about losing playlists etc.

Has anyone here come across this problem before?

Trash the pref file and try again.

Thanks, I have passed that on to him.

He tried the safe mode restart but unfortunately this did not cure things.

i had a similar problem.

manually downloaded the latest os update (even though system was already up to date) , ran the update & all was well in the land again

It is called a Combo download. Also, run a disk repair (disk utility) and permission repair.

Some feedback:

He has now tried all of the suggestions and nothing is fixing the problem. This is now being taken as one more sign that it may be time to get a new laptop.

Did he check the logs. Open system console and search for iTunes. It should generate an error in the system log

A sign or an excuse? :) There are still options. Has he tried creating a new user account and then seeing if iTunes launches from that account?
