iWork/iLife 08

Hmmmm... feeling awful guilty now
Downloaded iWork and Bootcamp 1.4 at work....
815 Mbyte

At well over 3gb I can see why they dont offer a iLife trial

Pity really. I think if they make it available in a trial, more people would download it from Apple, and after using it for a bit, be willing to pay the $79 for it. Instead of downloading it from a torrent site and be tempted by the included code (like I am with iWork before I realised there's a trial on Apple's website)

I think the new iPhoto fundamentally changes the way photos are stored - afaik it becomes far more aperture like in that way. Due to this you might not be able to go back if you didnt like the trial.

Good reason to buy the license then :-)
Maybe - in the meantime I'm going to back up my laptop and then give it a try. Being a bit of a photo junkie I'm only really interested with iPhoto.

hehe, I was being sarcastic - spent too many years working in a M$ environment....
If I like it I plan to buy copies for all my machines. Or at least one copy for all my machines - only going to use one at a time arent I. :)

Seeing as you only going for the iPhoto in iLife 08, would like to hear your impressions compared to the existing version as this is all I am interested in also - do not use the other apps included in iLife.

Well I've decided to install on my old G4 17" powerbook and already its telling me I cant install iMovie. iirc Apple has made the old version of iMovie available for just this reason.

Its got a couple nice new features - Events is one. All your photos are automatically grouped together. Kind of like Apertures Stacks. Unlike Stacks you can skim through the photos just by mousing over the thumbnail.

There are a couple new tools in the editing area - you can straighten and now when you adjust exposure, contrast, etc you can copy and paste those adjustments onto other photos - similar again to Aperture's Lift and Stamp.

One thing it still doesnt have is non destructive editing :(. Guess I'm going to stick with aperture on my main machine for that reason alone.

Erm... So I'm browsing iPhoto '06 and I enter editing mode by double clicking a photo and click on the adjust menu...
I get sliders to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, temperature, tint, sharpness, straighten the image, exposure and adjust the levels.
So I play around with the settings and after hitting 'done' the modified image is saved, but it looks really crappy. So I go to the Photo menu and hit 'Revert to original' and 'boom' I get the original back!

Are the editing features in iPhoto '08 really better than what I have now?

No, not really. Although the [-]batch editing[/-] ability to copy and paste editing attributes would make life easier if you took a load of shots that were say slightly underexposed and required the same adjustments.

When you edit something in iPhoto it duplicates the original file - with aperture the changes are made via metadata. The advantage? kb vs mb.
