Jackie Selebi has died

How many lives were destroyed because of the drugs he allowed to be sold? They used to confiscate the drugs at OR T airport and give them to his friends to resell them. Bloody disgrace

Sad day in this country if the ANC has to confirm a persons death and not a Medical practitioner.

ANC TO PAY FOR SELEBI'S FUNERAL

The ANC will pay for former police chief Jackie Selebi's funeral and memorial service, it said on Tuesday.

"It was agreed with the family that the African National Congress will be allowed to bury comrade Jackie Selebi who has been for most of his life at the centre of the organisation's leadership," spokesman Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.

"Based on this decision the ANC will bear all costs related to his memorial service and funeral."

Selebi died on Friday aged 64. He had reportedly suffered from diabetes and kidney problems. Selebi was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment on August 3, 2010, for taking bribes from convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti.

The former head of Interpol started serving his sentence in 2011, after being found guilty of corruption in 2010. He was released from Pretoria Central Prison on medical parole less than a year later.

The ruling party had held numerous meetings with the family and a committee representing the family and the ANC was set up. The committee would be led by the ANC's deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte.

A memorial service would be held on Friday at the Tshwane Events Centre in Pretoria at 5pm.

The funeral would be held at the NG Church in Pretoria on Sunday at 8am.
