Jaws - apple maps to blame?

My dad has a 4s and loaded R800 of prepaid on the weekend. It's all gone now. He connects to wifi at home but at work I set the apps so that a few will draw from cellular so he can check mail and whatsapp and weather etc.

I get him data bundles but it must have run out. I checked and he got no SMS notification like he normally gets.

So first a comment - screw you Vodacom.

Secondly, how can I find out what killed R800 so quickly? I checked the usage and was a bit confused. There is an airtime section that had a current period of 7 days. Then a data one that doesn't say what the current period is (never reset so is that since he got the phone?) but it's at 1.4 gigs. Only looking at the app usage only adds up to 150mb.

Is there any way to work out which app did the dirty? And any simple app suggestions as my dad is quite simple on the tech side. He just wants the phone to work the way he wants it to work, which means when he wants to check email he can but that it never ever ever uses data when the bundle is expired.

I'm on Android and check my usage very often so have never had these issues.

Apple maps?
Really?
Has your dad been late for appointments lately? Driven into the sea?
Must be apple maps.

App updates are only on wifi so it must have been background usage but again, is that possible? He certainly didn't use it intentionally to navigate anywhere. Surely just running in the BG wouldn't result in 450mb in 2 days? That is insane.

Updates will easily do that.
Especially if you are on oob rates.

Do you mean app updates or just regular updating of position by the app running in the BG? Updating position in the BG can't be 450mb, I refuse to accept that haha.

If you go to Settings and mobile then scroll down to the apps that you've allowed to use mobile data it will specify how much each app has used. Further down you can see what system services are using data.

I went to cellular data and on that page it had a list of apps (which you can turn on and off) with how much they have done underneath each entry. Maps had nothing underneath it.

I wasn't implying maps took all the data, all those other apps and your phone updates though.

Had the same issue of not receiving the notification were data bundle was depleted. Lost over R450 in an hour. Sorry vodacom but porting my number and not renewing my 10 year contract at the end of the year.

I sent my dad's number to Vodacom and they said it was from Maps. App updates are set to only on wifi and in fact they have to be installed manually.

And under system services?

This is nothing new(iphone data usage) and unfortunately you have a data hungry device that does not take your demographic into account.

We as smartphone users are all to familiar with how data usage checking has become part of our life.

1st world technology 3rd world country.

Ps

Ask him to check his balance......:whistling:

I had a similar issue on Vodacom 6 months ago ( go search for post somewhere yet ) my wife's phone went from never exceeding her 500mb bundle in 18 months to blowing past it and racking up R1000 of OOB charges in 1 month, there after her data ran out in 10 days and she kept having to load additional bundles. Luckly she was upgrading and migrating from the network.

I think there is a faulty APP that polls a server in the background 1000's of times generating large amounts of traffic ( its the only solution ) as all our data monitoring apps showed no additional usage.

Hope this helps ( and lucky you on prepaid ).
