JAWUG now a NPO

WUG membership fees. Good idea or bad?

Hi Daffy,

This is why I will have a problem with the membership fees. Say for example that you connect via another member. Then that member moves and now you do not have a signal anymore. I will be pretty p!ssed off!

On the other hand, imagine that the NPO can get hold of one of the old VANS licenses using these funds, then they can build their own network, and provide internet access at cost as well. Thus I will be able to use a cable to connect to my neighbor instead of having to use wireless. Or, using these funds, buy a connection to something like SEACOM for the use of all members! Sorry, I was dreaming a bit there...

Firstly, Internet access will never happen.
We will be applying for all the necessary licenses which will make this legal anyway, but if you provide internet access, there becomes an expectation which a WUG will simply not be able to meet.
But, we will have the licenses, but those licenses don't automatically come with a "dig up any road you want for free" card. Thats another story entirely ;)
 
So what exactly is the fee for then? I mean if the wug does not do anything and the members must do everything, then what are the fees for?
Not trying to be funny just want to know.

It wouldn't take long before a new WUG gets established. One that is free....

Imagine in a couple of years, there will be a lot of WUG in one city....
 
We need the money so that we can also upgrade some HighSites to make the network more stable, not just to get a license? AM i correct in saying this?
 
Otherwise the WUG becomes a drain on a few members pockets who always
dig and help keep it running, one lightning strike and their goes a few R1000+
 
I'm not even a user or connected yet, but I am thinking about paying the fee... just cos I like the concept. I wish I could also get hooked up though. :(
 
I've been wanting to join the Durban wireless group, just don't have time to faff with equipment and setting it up. I'll gladly pay the membership fees and get someone that can come hook the whole lot up...

And this is the problem with charging for "membership". People will want someting
for that R360.

My "membership" has cost me
about R3500 this year in equipment / petrol / time. Don't want to pay another R360 for membership...
 
Hmmm, I also think this is a step back for JAWUG, but on the other hand if there is not enough money donated by the WUG users is just useless to leave the network unattended and forget the countless hours spend on building highsites. So in one way or another there has to be a way to keep the network that these guys build from scratch to keep it running. And if thats the only way then nobody is suppose to complain about the annual fees. After all that is users choice to be or not to be a part of the WUG community!

I`m using the services of the PTAWUG right now and its not a secret that we are twice as bigger then the JAWUG and if the admins of PTAWUG come with the same idea of paying annual fees I will gladly pay it.

Maybe we can get some feedback from ProtZkroG, what can we expect to happen with PTAWUG in near future !

How much of that was for your own equipment?

I spent a significant amount amount to help fund an upgrade on my previous highsite, and a bit to help upgrade my current highsite, but my own equipment cost was definitely the major expense.

My total expenses in donations would effectively be more than R360/year, so I don't have a problem with paying that instead in the future. I just haven't gotten around to filling in the paperwork yet :p

Haven't been active on the network in a few months though :/

Your idea and their idea to negate the LLU problem, will work wonders. Then you just add the repeaters for your equipment, to all the high sites. If it won't interfere with each other. Perhaps it can even be integrated with existing equipment.

The last step would be for the WUGS to link into www.teraco.co.za

No more need for telkom.

Just kidding. We have rebates. You buy access (kit). PTAWUG gets discount from suppliers. We have donations. If you want better access, donate (time, money). No Management "Comittee" to run the WUG, please NO.
 
The fees are not a subscription fee to use the JAWUG network but rather a fee to be part of the club

I don't quite see what being part of the club entails, but from what I can see access is still free. What is everyone complaining about?
