Jeep patriot

Friend of mine bought a turbodiesel one with 40000km on the clock and the gearbox went in a month. Took two months to get the dealership to eventually repair it under guarantee and he still had to pay for a new clutch....

I did ride in it the other day. The performance is great, gets ~7.5L/100km and ride is nice. Not a huge fan of the cheap plasticky interior and the seats are comfy.

I'm considering the same as OP, no serious 4x4 for me just farm roads etc.

Some of these alternatives can be had for under R350k

1. Hyundai IX35
2. Kia Sportage
3. Subaru XV
4. Mitsubishi ASX
5. Chevrolet Captiva / Trailblazer (this thing looks like a Fortuner)
6. Ford Kuga
7. BMW X1 (Pricey brand new but maybe a demo)
8. 2013 Santa Fe (Out of your price range maybe at R400k but this is one wicked looking SUV)

Okay, let me try again. Thing is, you can get a 2.4L 4x4 CVT Patriot demo with a 100000km maintenance plan for R260k with under 10000km on (virtually new). What other demo 4x4 auto crossover can you get for that price, with the peace of mind of a maintenance plan? The interior and exterior are looking a lot better since the facelift, it's comfortable, capable and it is very good off the beaten track... better than many of it's competitors.

I've had problems before with a small hatchback, out of warranty. Cost me an arm and a leg to fix it and get it sold for next to nothing. What if that Land Rover has problems? You know, a Land Rover that's not leaking oil, does not have any oil to leak.

What if that Patriot has a problem? All cars can have problems, no brand is immune. Friend of mine had to have the engine in his Aston Martin replaced - R500k later.


As for your comment about LR leaking oil, big difference between old-school LRs and modern LRs, LOL!

But you are missing my main point. For R260k you get an almost new Jeep Patriot, with a maintenance plan. You do not have to worry about the cost of repairs for at least the first 2 years. For R299k you get a higher mileage, out of warranty diesel Land Rover Freelander. If things go wrong you are in trouble. I would love a Land Rover Freelander. I do not disagree that it is a better 4x4, but the cost and risk is higher than I can afford.

I'm with Quantum on this one, I have a Lexus IS 250SE just out of motorplan, I shudder to think of anything going wrong and will trade up for a warrantied vehicle any day now.

Its the piece of mind motoring for the next 3/5 years that gets me.

I'm currently in the market for a family-size SUV. Quantum Theory's arguments are sound and the newish pre-owned Patriot falls with in my budget. I'm also eyeing pre-owned Subaru Forester X
 
Just saw a 2005 Freelander 2 2.0HSE advertised for R120k somewhere in Roodepoort. sounds like almost a decent price...

Speak to uncle Fazda on the forums for some advice on the Forester, while you there look at the XV as well.

I should be seeing you for that XV test drive, I'v been watching Youtube reviews ad nauseum, time to test this baby :)
