Jeep patriot

Been driving one for almost 4 months and 14000km's and it still puts a smile on my face. I've got the CVT. Great around town. Gets around 10.5l/100km. It's got more than enough power, when you need it. Rather capable in sand, mud and over light obstacles. It's a very comfortable car. Service from Jeep Century City has been good, so far. IMO it is a better buy than any Korean crossover...

I'd qualify BETTER:
It's a true 4x4.
It's a real SUV - not a crossover.
It has heritage.
It has retro Jeep looks - that can be a good or a bad thing, depending on where you stand. (There are definitely prettier crossovers around).
4 speed box (with Continuously Variable Automatic Transaxle) - this sounds like a deal breaker for me. Your experience? 4 gears just don't sound right for anything modern day. My trusty Tucson (don't judge) has a 4 speed (distinct gears though) and I hate it.
Bang for buck - pretty much the best deal in town.

Believe it or not, BOTH my neighbors (opposite sides) recently bought patriots. The smiles on their faces when they drive off in the mornings probably tells you all you need to know about owning a patriot.

4 gears? In manual mode, it gives you 6 virtual gears (CVT does not work with gears). Motor journos always give CVT boxes a bad rep, but I'm loving mine.

hows the performance of the transmission. how loud is that cvt? thinking of test driving an older model.

It was a little weird at first, but I got used to it in about 2 weeks. Performance is good. If you want to overtake a car while cruising at 120km/h, you just floor the accelerator, the CVT drops the ratio, refs jump up and you're doing 150km/h in no time. With cruise control set to just under 130km/h on steep hills, you never lose speed. Quick enough off the line too. For me, the gearbox is not loud at all.

Thinking of buying one. Any thoughts?

Why? There are so many better SUVs out there.

For starters, this thing looks like a 5yr old took a stanley knife to an ice cream tub. And that interior, wow, cheap tacky plastics.

True 4x4? Does it have low range? #smh

Look, do you want to drive up mountains or simply have a high seating position when you're driving around?

If the latter, have a look at the Suzuki Vitara or the Kia Sportage, much better value for money

Styling is subjective. To me it looks better than a Sportage. It is a crossover, yes. Definitely more capable than the Kia. No more "cheap" plastics than in any Kia. A new 2.4 AWD auto Sportage goes for R340k, while the same spec Patriot goes for R310k... that includes the maintenance plan.

Vitara is really nice, but you would have to get a higher mileage one to compete in price with the Patriot...

There's a reason it's cheaper.

For R300K, you can get yourself a very nice 2nd hand Disco3, which is without a doubt a million times better than the Patriot.

Or, as I said earlier, if you only want to be sitting higher than others in traffic, get a Freelander2, it will run circles around the Patriot and indeed, even around most pukka 4x4s

Yes, great advice. Buy a second hand out of warranty Land Rover Disco3. The maintenance and fuel costs will bankrupt the OP.

Rubbish man, there are thousands of D3 owners who are out of maintenance plan and happy with their vehicles. Maintenance is cheaper since indies are now fully proficient on these vehicles and the diesel is very economical. Guys are putting 400-500Kkm on these discos without major issues.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to application - does he want to drive up mountains or simply cruise the highways sitting higher than others?

Look, it's his money to waste. He asked for thoughts, I gave mine.

Have you ever driven one? As an owner, that wasted my money on one, I can assure you that a Patriot can do a little more than give you an elevated driving position. I'm not saying that I do 4x4 trails and "drive up mountains", but I can mission comfortably into the Karoo on backroads and drive around on farms where no car can go. It's perfectly fine in sand and mud... plus it is a good commuter and good on the highway. Maybe not ideal for you, but perfect for me.

OP, have a look at the new Renault Koleos. For 339K you get a lot more features. I bought a Patriot in August and already the aftersales service is putrid. No user manuals or service book. Waiting for it to come from Belgium.
Parts dept NEVER answer phones or respond to mails.
4K for a MOPAR tow bar, another 4K to fit it. Dealer says you void the warranty if you take it to a Hi-Q.
The fuel tank is 50lt-range is about 460km. I have the cvt and love it but over taking is noisy. If you floor it the revs sit at 6k as it increases speed but it really doesn't sound nice. So I use the tiptronic feature for overtaking.
Services are every 12k.

It's French ... so no-no ... :p

Not too bad on fuel ... I get about 450km out of my tank (100lt) :erm:

Sound like you got taken for a ride. No service book? go too another branch. unless you stuck with this branch. Phone the dealer principal and ask him to put you through to the parts department since they don't answer their phones.

I bought a manual Patriot for the wife almost a year ago now. Ride comfort is fantastic, the seats are as comfy as a lazy boy recliner. Petrol consumption is better than my 2.0l Kia sportage (man). But thats about all I can say good about Chrysler SA. Useless bunch of twats. The car under warranty had a faulty 2nd gear, took 2 months (leaving us car less) to get the parts. They do not offer any assistance what so ever for rental or courtesy car. I had to b!tch like anything right up to the National Service & Parts Manager at Chrysler SA to light a fire up their arses! Eventually I found out that they had a full replacement box, but worked out that it would be "cheaper" to fix our one by stripping a brand new one for parts ?!?!? 2 X wtf ?!?!

Oh yeah, and I live in Pinetown, my local Chrysler cant do these type of repairs, I had to take the car all the way to Umhlanga Ridge Chrysler. Best thing is, the gearbox leaks oil now.... have to to take it back ... I'm very hesitant :(
