Jeffrey Hedberg is the Altech COO.

Jeffrey Hedberg was previously the acting CEO of Telkom, and before that the CEO of Multi-Links.

JSE-listed Allied Technologies Limited (Altech) today announced the appointment of Jeffrey Hedberg as Chief Operating Officer (COO) to the Altech Group, effective 1 July 2011.

Hedberg was appointed Telkom's acting group CEO in July 2010. He took over from Reuben September, who in terms of his contract was supposed to leave in November 2010, but left abruptly at the beginning of July 2010.

Hedberg was initially employed as CEO of Telkom's Nigerian subsidiary Multi-Links.

Boston-born Hedberg said within two weeks of his appointment at acting CEO, he saw "a great company" in Telkom.

Hedberg was credited with turning around mobile phone company Cell C during his tenure as CEO there.

Hedberg was also chairman of Virgin Mobile South Africa.

Communications Minister Roy Padayachie, at an announcement in Midrand of the digital television standard South Africa is to adopt, declined to comment on Hedberg's departure.

Jeffrey Hedberg became CellC CEO on 16 May 2006, taking over from Talaat Laham. Hedberg is the former CEO and Chairman of Deutsche Telekom, USA and Member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Telekom AG.


Hedberg studied business at Northeastern University and international relations and management at the University of Denver.

Work Experience

In 1998, Jeffrey A. Hedberg had it made according to a BusinessWeek Online article ( ) about his career. His turnaround of the international operations of Swisscom had vaulted him to the highest rungs of the Swiss national phone company. At 36, he was the youngest member of the management board and the only American. Yet he still had time to enjoy being a gentleman farmer at his Alpine home, where he fed the sheep and even harvested hay. It was a really nice life, he recalls.

He started as an intern at U.S. West in 1990, before moving to London to work in the company's international division. In 1992, took a job advising telecom clients of Coopers & Lybrand.

In 1994, he was named head of international operations at Swiss national phone company Swisscom. Since January, 1999, he worked as the chief of international operations at Deutsche Telekom. In 2006 he moved to CellC, replacing Talaat Laham as CEO of South Africa’s third cellular provider.

Telkom announced on 1 June 2010 that Reuben September will retire as Group Chief
Executive Officer ("GCEO") and resign his directorship at the expiry of his
Having regard to the uncertainty which prevails during such transition periods,
Reuben September has agreed with the Telkom Board to step down as GCEO and
resign as a director from 7 July 2010. He will assume a consulting role until 1
November 2010.
The Telkom Board has commenced a process to appoint a new GCEO. In the interim
Mr Jeffrey Hedberg has been appointed as Acting GCEO.
The Telkom Board believes that these arrangements provide leadership, continuity
and stability at an important time given a number of key strategic and
operational deliverables.
A successor to Mr September will be announced in due course.

Mr Jeffrey Hedberg was appointed Acting Group Chief Executive Officer in July 2010. He joined the Telkom Group in November 2009 as CEO of Multi-Links. From 2006 – 2009 Mr Hedberg was CEO of Cell C, the third mobile operator in South Africa. In 1999, he joined the management of Deutsche Telekom and became the chief of international operations. He also spent time at the Swiss national phone company, Swisscom, as head of international operations. His experience and expertise spans fixed and mobile telecommunications, mergers and acquisitions, international expansion and vendor engagement. Mr Hedberg’s leadership and people management skills are well respected by people who have worked with him.
