So if I find a satire article that has "proof" that aliens have indeed invaded our planet and most of us are slaves, then I can use most of those paragraphs as proof?

Cool!

So if I find a factual article that contains some satire but nothing about aliens invading our planet and making most of us slaves, then can I use the satirical bit to prove a negative?

Cool!

A factual article contains references to back up claims. Satire articles just make up some nonsense. "I have spoken to a couple of people and they say...." does not constitute evidence.

I would not use unfounded claims from any article, be it factual or satire, to back up an argument.

Least of all would I use comments made by Jeremy Clarkson to back up any argument.

If I did I would only buy cars with cup holders. :p

I have probably read more articles by Clarkson than most people around. I have a road test here from a magazine I bought back in '85 that was written by him. I have also watched every episode of Top Gear. I think I remember him. All the bigger my surprise that he finally caught a wake up.

It was not a technical paper written for Scientific American. I wasn't expecting a list of references from peer reviewed publications and journals.

The thing is, after all of this you're still not getting my point. Clarkson is held in environmental circles as the epitome of consumerism and blind faith in exponential growth. I'm not trying to use this article to prove anything. If I wanted to prove the inevitability of environmental or economic collapse then the last person on earth that I would use to prove my point would be Clarkson.

I'm merely pointing out that Clarkson has finally woken up and realised that none of this is sustainable. Frankly, I'm surprised that it took him this long to come to this obvious conclusion as he strikes me as being a very intelligent man regardless of his satirical public image.

I'm sorry StrongTurd, I don't mean to fight with you or anything, but the article you quoted does not make me think he has seen the light.

Sure, he knows there is a global financial crisis, but nowhere in that article did he make me think that he himself will change.

I recently had a very good laugh when I watched Top Gear and his answer to the fuel crisis was to find out what supercar gets the most miles to the gallon :eek:

If you dislike JC so much why do you read all his articles and watch Top Gear?

* Sigh. *

Do I really need to explain this to you?

I really like his writing style and I find his TV personality to be very entertaining. I like the man although I think he is an idiot. I'm also mad about cars. Amongst other things, I own and have read from cover to cover every issue of Car Magazine from January 1980 until present.

This is all besides the point, though.
