Theres plenty of howtos on the net, it really comes down to what equipment your using and what kind of node you want.

Iv'e always been a linux fan, tho thats complicated if your new to linux. Ap's are pretty simple to setup. Then theres always the plain ol' client with a wireless card in windows (*shudder*). Just shout at what kind of setup your looking for and I'll let you know what you need to do and what equipment you should be looking at.

I want to setup a good node (Access Point) - range of about 1km in a circle, and, at the same time, link up to another node maybee 3km away.
So - I need 2 network access points, one for the "circle" antennae, and then another access point using a tight beam antennae.
Circle Antennae = "Omni" Antennae (8 Dbi).
Tight Beam Antennae = "Grid" Antennae (24 Dbi).
Each antennae needs to be run by one RF Network card/one RF access point.

I have no idea how to determine the distance that the Omni antenna can reach, or if it's worth it. I know that I was communicating with Megawan on a Grid antennae to the tower some 9 km's away, so the grid antennae's range is quite massive, but the omni ???

The 2 network's (One for each card) then need to be able to talk to each other using routing.
Then - there's my little network which must also be meshed into the picture.

Okay... Omni's are evil. (that little 8dbi omni wont get you very far at all)

Omni's will pickup interference from everywhere.. and it'll just make stuff icky.
If you're only going to be linking 1 or 2 people to the same point, go with direction antenna's like Grids with an access point each.
This way you wont pickup any noise from other source, you will get great distances, and the best speeds. You could also get away with a little tree or 2 in the line of sight.

If you're looking at connecting more people, then go for a sector or a flat panel with a wide beamwidth. Only cover the areas that will be useful. Its pointless sticking an omni up that covers 360 degrees if you can only see 120degrees worth of people.

Sectors and Flatpanels have a higher gain, and are less susceptable to interference. The Kensington JAWUG Network uses a 60degree flat panel to connect 3 people, and it works great without causing interference to the nearby WISP's.

Please guys, if you enter nodes, and those that have entered already, please ensure your details are correct. I decided to start contacting people in my vacinity, one is in fact 5km away from me, through a massive hill, yet the map says he's 0.8km, and 2 others, who are 2900m above see level, funny, last I checked, I never saw a nuilding 1500m high.

ELEVATION IS FROM GROUND LEVEL, NOT SEA LEVEL!!!!
and as someone else suggested, the sentech zonelocator has at least one good use, determining GPS co-ords for nodedb!!


Another issue, I seem to have found a glitch on the site, if someone hear happens to be kieran murphy, perhaps you can point this out to the powers that be on nodedb, I'm pasting 2 links, they are the links for the connection between 2 users, myself, and eWorld, notice the elevation diagrams at the bottom of both pages!

Yup, thats me...

I know the Elevation data is incorrect, and I have notified the admins. They say thats the data they get from mappoint, which is a microsoft thing. So I dont think there's much of a chance of that getting fixed any time soon.
The nodedb site passes the arguments to the Mappoint server, which returns the images.

We are looking at integrating similar functionality into the JAWUG site soon.

daffy told me the elevation data was horrible, i thought it looked semi correct... until i found out i live on the edge of a 100m tall roughly 85 degree cliff, either im blind or the cliff my house is about to fall off isnt there.

Bandwidth is the main problem when setting up a wi-fi net. Well I solved mine
by getting hold of a company who is forced to fork out R7000 for a SAIX and Diginet line
here in Nelspruit. They are desperate to share the cost of bandwidth. Surely the JBH net
forum should be able to do the samem ?

You don't need to set up anything adrianl. Simply go register on nodedb.com so that people in your area knows about your interest in getting connected. That's 99% of the battle won.
