lets see if we can get this up and running, maybe we can link something like a Alberton mesh to a Edenvale one.

Yea, the "leader" of JAWUG initiative (with the most technical knowledge) has been dead ever since everyone put up their nodes on nodedb and started to put up their hotspots...

Im the kind of person who thinks things through before investing x amount in equipment... but without advice I am stranded...

Hell, my gran on a scooter with a memory stick is faster than Sentech's MyWireless!

Well I am bulding a base network with multiole nodes in jhb, so email me if your intrested in interconneting etc, I can also give some advise on what to do as well as what works and does not. have had to learn the hard way !

If you fill up a station wagon with data tapes and drive to capetown you could transfer 10000 GB in 11 hours, and it would cost you R 500 in petrol, Thats the kind of internet I wanna see !

Hi guys.

I'm new to this forum & I'd like to find out about Wifi meshes.
How much do they cost? How do I set them up? What are the benefits?

Does it mean I'll have faster internet access if I set up a mesh?

rebel, no, a mesh is just like a local area network, aka LAN, all connected with MAAAAAAGIIIIIC (aka wireless network equipment)

The idea of which is to create a community on a wide range connected to each other so you don't NEED to connect to the internet for gaming or file sharing etc.

This could also mean you would get internet access, but only if the person who setup the wireless access point, is kind enough to share his connection with all the users...

Dean, go ahead and mail me! All advise welcome

Guys, instead of emailing each other private, since we all here interested in this and thinking about linking email the specs and prices and wants here, then we can all give ideas etc into this, although i am not a gamer, i would def be interested in linking,

Depending on price i def want to extend the link and add my own houe and will also link my sister in so that she cna use my ADSL, you know you have to looka fter the little sister/big brother habits.

I can think a budget of say 500 to 750 would bereasonable, after that it becomes another expensive toy of course, hehehe

I am also interested - I already run a wireless lan @ home, and would love to be able to open it up. Even better if I can do it at work as well. Both home and work is in Fontainebleau, btw.

I'm also very keen. Got most (all) of the equipment, antenna's etc, but nothing to do with it. Gimme something to point at!

Hey people.
I'm not dead.. just working :/
I've just started a new job, and spare time is very hard to come by. I'm going to try catch up on whats going on with JaWug in the next few weeks and start pushing it forward again.
I have been helping a small group of guys out in Atlasville (Benoni/Boksburg) and someone in Edenvale.

If you post to this list looking for someone to link to, please include the link to your node on www.nodedb.com. It just makes it easier for people to see if they really will be able to connect.

The company that I work for does sell wireless hardware, so if anyone is interested in purchasing some equipment, pvt me and we'll get someone to get hold of you.

On a side note, we just got a Linksys WRT54G to play with, and with firmware from www.sveasoft.com it has definately become a favourite toy of mine.

I stay in Parkview. Anyone live in that area?
Link to my node:

Is any1 here actually connected to the johannesburg mesh?

k... gonna try reply to everything above in one post.

JAWUG started with 1 access point and 3 nodes in Kensignton, we encouraged people to list their nodes so we could organize connections to each other, unfortunately there has not been alot of activity in LOS with the original nodes, most people seem to live in Randburg/Sandton/Northcliff/Etc. Currently we are trying to organize some nice backbone links which cost quite a bit to setup so we gotta plead for donations. At the same time Daffy has pretty much plotted the entire east-rand on one sexy map, he's working hard. I moved 2 days ago from node #5 to #148 on nodedb which means If you live in the Randburg area I am going to hunt you down like a dog and get something going, also if you have any wireless equipment, get it up even if you are pointing at your street, also please update your nodes if you get your equipment active, even if your wireless network has no external antennae and your just using it your house (aids the wardriving process). Some of you also have seriously incorrect GPS locations, I suggest using Sentech's awesome little map (http://66.18.65.122/zonelocator/welcome.htm) to get your exact GPS locations. Also please include your street on nodedb if possible (dont have to put the house # if your worried about crazy people). If you look at nodedb alot of you are practically in someone else's backyard, click the contact link and ask them if they wanna try get a connection going and provide CORRECT information so that they can reply, someone contacted me but entered and incorrect email address (toss me another email if you see this :P).

Rebel, Good place to get equipment is Rectron (www.rectron.co.za), Cyberdyne (www.cyberdyne.co.za), Uniterm Direct (www.dbg.co.za), Poynting (www.poynting.co.za) and Miro (www.miro.co.za). Yeh, but best bet is to pvt daffy for equipment, so you just dont go buying random junk.

GougedEye, Put your eq up and point it at the closest node on nodedb, helps when people are checking for nearby wireless activity.

Stoke, just put your node up :P

Mkay enc - me going to also update nodedb now that i have a way of getting the GPS locations.
I'll only be up in Early Feb 2005 though, had to purchase a vehicle - sigh.
