Hi

Is there anyone on here that still uses the JHB WUG, Is it worth joining still or not? I have always been interested in joining but would need some assistance in setting it up

I was on until about year ago. Would love to be back on but unfortunately I dont have Line of Sight to any Highsights anymore.

If it is anything like CTWUG then you should definitely join!

WOW ok well I am in Honeydew/Sundowner EXT 7 and struggling to use the plotter to see if I will have any reception. Does anyone here know how to use it properly so that I can see if I can connect to a Highsite?

I agree with Dade - if its anything like CTWUG it is worth it to join...

I keep wanting to join PTAWug but never seem to have the spare cash for the kit.

I just looked now, my closest high sight is in a straight line downhill from my house, about 3.2km away and not a single building between me and it (although possibly there may be a couple of trees in the line).

I'll have to see. Wish I could borrow before I buy.

well if got direct line of site you should not have issues. Just wish there was someone from MYBB that is in the same area as me so that I can make sure there is signal and works smoothly. I will make a plan for the cash for the equipment even if it is 3 months I have to save. Just need to know what I am saving up for

You can try the people in #jawug on irc.wug.za.net .

AstroTurf join Ptawug IRC and ask for a testkit ;) try before you buy! :D

labratza personally, as a wugger for 4-5 years now, yeah I find it worth it. Sure there's issues as with any network but WUG is awesome. I can't imagine life without it these days. I'm a happy WUG addict.

I'll do that when I can actually afford one. December possibly (although my wife will be on maternity leave then so who knows).

Thanks for the advice though :D

Testkit = usually free or a small deposit for the duration of borrowing it. Ask around for second hand equipment, most wuggers seem to have equipment laying around. Gives you a small baseline of equipment to start with that you can slowly upgrade as you get more cash for it. Hope to see you wugged one day! :D

I will be taking photos from my roof this weekend.

I want to see if I can actually see the plot that has the highsight (now that I actually know exactly where to look).

By the looks of things I may even be able to just rip the useless dish off the pole and use that pole to mount the antenna.

Looks like clear los. the Ptawuggers in irc #ptawug are quite helpful if you need any help with anything. or even contact me in #Jawug. Not once have I ever regretted joining WUG. It can be a bit of a pain with los checks, scanning and connecting at first but once connected, so worth it. ;)

You can get away with cheaper equipment like a microtik groove for R750 and a grid antenna for R500 then you need a mounting pole and lan cable so all in less than R1500.

I dont know why they like to make people buy that kit as its expensive to replace when lightning zaps it and the ods of most people becomming high sites are quite small. Rather ask for donations when a user wants to become a highsite and replace all the kit. Most of us make donations if we are aware of upgrades in our areas.

That groove and/or grid may not work with the Highsite you are trying to connect to, and that only allows a single link, what about expansion? R1800-R2000 for the kit and you can have 3 links, perhaps even help someone else out, or your section of WUG. Thinking ahead. sometimes a groove is useful. I use one so I'm not anti-groove. I just use it along side my 3 other Jawug links on my RB433. As for lightning, earth your stuff or put up a lightning rod :P Why spend twice to A) get connected B) buy more kit later on, which uses more money, when you get a second link. Once off Wug kit vs a groove and grid now, then another RB433 + other stuff later. Just my 2c

Scoop has a return policy, I can't remember how long though.
You can buy it, and should you have no LOS, return the kit no questions asked.

I get the whole thinking ahead thing it just does not make sense to me when probably less than 20% of sites will ever be high sites. I would rather have people donate towards new highsites then the hardware can be tailored for that site. The community will also grow quicker because the cost of entry will be lower right now the scoop price is R2500 for the wug kit. If the site gets upgraded the groove can be sold or used for testing or other links so it wont be a total loss.

Yea look if I join there is no way my location could become a permanent highsight as I am renting but possibly the next place I move into would. Anyway, right now I have no extra cash for this type of thing, my wife is 5 months pregnant :)
