labratza personally, as a wugger for 4-5 years now, yeah I find it worth it. Sure there's issues as with any network but WUG is awesome. I can't imagine life without it these days. I'm a happy WUG addict.

I get the whole thinking ahead thing it just does not make sense to me when probably less than 20% of sites will ever be high sites. I would rather have people donate towards new highsites then the hardware can be tailored for that site. The community will also grow quicker because the cost of entry will be lower right now the scoop price is R2500 for the wug kit. WUG kits(low gain) is R1000 odd from scoop.

The idea of an additional antenna, a omni, is to help create a mesh over the general area. New users can bounce their links over another WUG user, thus creating a mini-highsite.
 
These days I think it is better to have a router per wireless interface. ie. Grooves / SXTs / Omnitik / RB912 . If you buy a 433 with the idea of later expansion you will need to buy another radio (495.00) + lmr (R110.00) + pigtail (R60) + antenna (R395) = R1060. If you buy an extra Groove (L3 lic) (R625.00) + Antenna (R395) + few meters cat5 (R50) = R1070. So for R10 extra you get less interference since you don;t have two radios in a single enclosure and you don't need coax/lmr cable. Also if the one router dies only your one link goes down.

If you are close enough to the second site, you can even get a SXT (R650) and Cat5(R50) = R700 and it will give you a dual polarity link and you will save R360 .

Want to add an access point for people around you? add a omnitik (R1050) + cat5(R50) = R1100

So in short start off with a groove + grid (single pol link) or RB912 + dish (dual pol link) and if you want to expand just add another router.

+1 to the above. CTWUG has moved from RB433's ages ago, as going one router per link has drastically helped with noise and thus giving better speeds.
 
So I Agree with dade somewhat - only problem I have with going a device per link is the amount of extra network cables you have to run, extra switch space and off course extra power injectors and extra multiplugs, where as if you run something like a RB433 - you have one POE, one LAN cable and less multiplugs. Both solutions does have their drawbacks though - like mentioned - more noise...

My point is, no one has highlighted what the benefits of joining a WUG are? From the posts so far no one has mentioned whats great about this.

If I am going to shell out R1500 worth of kit, apart from the installation, getting it connected and optimisation..... All of which sounds like a lot of fun, how is the WUG going to be beneficial to me in these days of uncapped internet and faster speeds?

Am not knocking it, I just am wondering

Well I can be corrected but a friend of mine tells me that download speeds are astounding, mmo's are fun and socilising on it is great.

No idea what else is on there as I have never joined it myself.

Number one rule of The WUG: Never speak about The WUG.

Try to imagine what a bunch of smart people do with a 24/7 LAN party of a few thousand people.
Speeds are also equipment speed. There is no maximum speed, nor a cap.
 
I'm really sorry we were unable to get you connected Polemus. :( sometimes LOS is cruel. I should know.. I'm in a valley. that's surrounded by hills and mountains. getting linked was a mission and a half.

imranpanji there is gaming, social networking, braai sessions and meetings, lots of interesting people, things to do and learn. If you have ever wanted to learn about networking, WUG is the place. Want to learn and play with a certain routing protocol, such as BGP or OSPF, you can use wug for that. It's a community of anyone interested in gaming, IT, networking, or just wanting to be part of something etc. There's no set in stone purpose other than "learn, experiment, play". Well, that's the best way I can put it.

If you just want to join a WUG for downloading and speeds then its not for you. See it as a hobby or a new research project where you learn about networking, developing new services etc.

OK. Am not a gamer anymore , and have built long range wireless networks before....so nothing much for me there I suppose

Yea he says as long as I can get above the tree line I'll be good :)

I reckon I am going to have to go about 3 to 5 meters above my roof level or just do it from a different angle.

6m poles available from scoop for about R360 or so :P that will get you over them if 3-5 will cover it.
