call it what ever you like, the other day I heard a four year old call it the "hairport"! Ahhhh... kids.
 
Personally I call it the most poorly designed airport I've ever had the misfortune of using. They can rename it what they like its not going to improve it.

Instead of wasting money on renaming towns and cities and airports, why dont they just build new airports and establish new towns which they can call what ever they want?

At least that might make a difference.

You make it sound like changing the name of the national airport is a trivial deed with no logical or productive reason behind it.

Ok since you put it that way, what productivity do you think can come of it? And let's leave apartheid out of it because it's not like the existing name is named after an apartheid minister.

Does it make the thieves rifling through the bags more productive?

Look at the big picture - of course its trivial. It's the name of an airport. Call it whatever you like but the vast majority of south african's will never be able to afford to fly on a plane using it.

It's not just any airport, it is our top international airport.

We want to become a beacon on the african continent and sit at the head of the african union. So I can see why SA would want to change the name of the top international airport the same way we changed the name of our capital city. Is it African-ness? Of course it is. Is it a good thing? Of course it is.

So changing the name will magically make us the a beacon on the african continent?

Still haven't answered the question - how does it help productivity (since you were the one who mentioned it)?

We know it's the top airport, the question is how does changing the name of it attract foreign investment as well as boost the local economy? What does name-changing have to do with becoming a beacon? Do you have any idea of the expense involved? I'm glad that you're happy that our tax money is spent on crap like this when it could be used on issues where we're found wanting. Maybe the homeless will agree with you that changing an airports name is more important than putting a roof over their head.

I'm just wondering how a name change will make us a beacon or the top nation in africa?

Your argument is for a cure, rather that prevention. Most school children know the saying "prevention is better than cure" or the "teach a man to fish" philosophy.

It gives us credibility within the african union, again, like renaming Pretoria Tswane. The african union is very important in raising the standard african countries live up to. Now look ahead and see us doing more trade with our neighbours on the continent in emerging markets at cheaper costs and the results on our economy.

Difference is that there's very little else to prevent because it's bordering on illogical. How does one prevent a homeless person from becoming further homeless? See what I mean?

Right now we need a cure. When all our wrongs are corrected, then we can look at preventing our current situation from happening again. Then they can feel free to rename all they want, but right now all that money is better spent on improving the standard of living for people.
 
Oliver Tambo International Airport .. (Nee .. Jan Smuts International Airport)

If Field Marshal Jan Christian Smuts* was not good enough neither is Oliver Tambo IMO.

They should have left it as Johannesburg International Airport, end of story.

JIA was a Neutral name.

Perhaps they are going to change the name of Johannesburg soon as well?
Name changing is priority at the moment it seems?

Wonder what the 2010 Soccer Tourists will call Johannesburg International Airport?
