Job cuts at MTN?

The proposed merger between MTN and Indian telecoms operator Bharti Airtel could help Africa's biggest cellular network significantly reduce operational costs through job cuts, according to a report by an Indian stock brokerage.

Telkom here we go again

Make an absolute killing then penalise the people who got you there.

50% of the current work force will retire when the shares mature December this year anyway :D

Aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

Okay, maybe MTN have one of the worst call centres in SA, but job lose is never a good thing. :(

Analysts say Bharti's expertise in running networks at minimal cost would expose MTN to a culture of low-cost operations. The two firms are in talks that could lead to a merger.

IIRC, there has been reports that although the mobile market in India is growing rapidly, their service networks are known to be poor outside metros.

So I would suggest that MTN not take that suggestion to heart.

EDIT: On a personal note, I do not think this deal is a good idea, there just does not seem to a good value proposition for either companies to hook up. Which means to me that MTN shareholders are driving this thing, and when you add to that the MTN Exco that is negotiating the deal stands to make BILLIONS just from their share options. The customer is gonna be screwed in the end.

Its operation expenditure, Bharti will be the parent company and take on more of MTNs opex and SA MTN employees will suffer... and others gain.

I think the same would happen when Voda buys Voda.

BUT all this is just rumours that dont mean much, this Bharti/MTN thing is very Hush Hush so the media just spreading rumours, MTN SA cant risk even a 10% job cut.
