Join gaming lan via a VPN or something

Hi guru's.

So I was wondering, would it be possible to join a laning session via a VPN?

Say, a bunch of friends gather at one freinds house, and a few people live to far to join them physically, is there a way he can join it via internet????

this will let me or who ever join the lan as if im there? no need for them to extra configure? hamachi and tunngle works great, but then everyone should be signed into the networks

I`ve looked at GIT (appears a bit dated), LANbridger, Hamachi and Tunngle

How do they compare (speed,security,ease etc.)
We really want to try play private LAN games over Internet local but security is a bit of a worry.
Any advice to put us at ease or perhaps helpful tips would be appreciated...

Mostly 2 machines at a time, a combination of XP/Vista/Windows 7 machines.
