Hi there

Is there a service online where I can see the performance of the JSE, or a share on a JSE, in USD rather than ZAR? Hence, a system where you can see the performance where the value of the currency is taken into account?

Some share platforms can pull Excel historical data. Do the same for FX rate & multiply with excel formula. Plus it has the added benefit that you can make graphs from that easily

Alternatively if you're lazy just find a JSE top 40 ETF thats listed on a US exchange....that'll show in USD and be very very close to same thing

edit...make sure the etf doesn't have the word hedged in its name

Thanks for the help. The ETF is a good idea, if there are actually JSE ETFs stretching back that far.

RPM check out the Sanlam Ishares demo account you can choose your currency, that might help.

I don't have the answer but something interesting I read is that in Dollar terms, over 117 and 50 years, the JSE is the best performing stock exchange in the world. Wow.

Sorry but I would have to see a lot more on this before I believe it.
JSE mostly had in FTSE/Resource shares in the past which wouldve performed better on the
London Stock exchange and then countries like Singapore have outperformed those indexes as well.

In dollar terms the JSE has been losing so much steam in the past 20 years as well.

What makes you say dual-listed shares would have (automatically) performed better in London? Just because Zuma makes us all feel negative next to the braai, doesn't make e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g related to SA crap :D

Anyway, it's based on the Credit Suisse Global Investment Returns Yearbook with data since 1900 and performance measured in US Dollars.

You can easily do some recent comparisons by looking at the MSCI indexes which are calculated in Dollars, but unfortunately the MSCI SA Index was only launched in 1992 so it gives a bit of a restricted view.
