If by network you mean congestion on dslam/exchanges or you still need to add that to your list

Well, I was just talking in layman's terms. So by "network" I guess what I am trying to say is the route running between the routers to the server and the Internet Service Provider, if that makes sense.

all a traceroute is is next hop icmp requests. so you get to check latency and servers (responding or not) on your route. if a host/router doesnt respond its not neccesarily down, it could just be dropping icmp packets. thus a xmas or fin scan with nmap with input piped from traceroutes output can give you a better idea of whats going on on the way to your target. ; )

EDIT: just dont do a full portscan of some host owned by your ISP... it will cause a few blinky rows on the screens at their NOC.

EDIT 2 : And if you really wanna get a crackin... go here to get started : http://insecure.org/

EDIT 3: Im not liable if you fck up.

EDIT 4: Wake Up Call by The Prodigy is delicious when slightly toasted.

Thank you for the reply but I'm not technically-minded person. I have no idea what's a fin scan or nmap, and all these fancy words. I just simply wanted to know what a traceroute can possibly indicate as wrote in my initial post. Thanks anyway.
