So got the bad news this morning.
Now in a way i am quite upset and in a way it opens up a whole lot of new possibilities for me.
What do you think is the best steps to take from here on in. I am updating my CV and looking for new jobs but not sure whats the best sites to look at. (I am in I.T development)

 Useful advise Dave.

And by the way it's emigration, not immigration. ;)
Yup yup, thanks for the correction.
Needless to say, I look back and now realize that I damn well should have emigrated 5 years ago when I was offered the opportunity.
The country is being raped by the current government, and is not showing any remorse nor even slowing down, get out while you still can.
If you want to come back in 5 years time, I am pretty sure that you will have no difficulty at all.

maybe apply for spell/grammer checker at mybb?

Grammar. :p

Davemc was right, you apply for immigration with that country's embassy when you emigrate. Once you're accepted, you start the emigration process this side by closing accounts etc.

what is the process of looking for jobs overseas? anyone done it? simple as getting hold of employment agencies there?
I got the passport etc, just need the job and i am gone

Easy way to remember... Immigrate = In to, Emigrate = Exit

Have you got any clothing or furniture accounts, not sure about car loans.

With clothes & furniture there is an insurance portion to your repayments. permitting you are paid up to date you can get these accounts paid up through that insurance, at least removing that stress from you. But make sure your payments are up to date before informing them of the retrenchment.

I have no specific advice, but I have thought that with the possibility of 3 Internet cables landing in SA (Seacom [East C.], Eassy [East C.] & Wax [West C.]), telecommuting around the world springs to mind as a lucrative job. Over to Telkom (hahahaha <sob>).

Sorry to hear that, dude.

I am not in IT but I have referred many people to carrerjunction and pnet.

My friend is in the IT business and he does a lot of his recruiting through pnet.

Hope that helps.
