Karmic impressions

Finished my installation earlier today.
Must say it runs way better on my sucky work machine.
Previously I had to turn graphics down cause it moved so sluggishly but now its pretty quick and I love it :D

Yeah that's normal, even jaunty was that way AFAIK that's the feature I like about it, allows my router to use one account and I can connect using another account and not cap the routers account. If you need both then pppoeconf will be the other option I think.

Personally it feels sluggish, and they should include ratings, but it's a good start.

I know what it can do, but I do want to be able to use 1 network card for both PPOE and LAN connections. I need two network cards to do this when Windows can do it out of the box? That is pathetic in my honest opinion!

I think if you setup a static IP etc it will work like windows.

Thanks will try that! Here is hoping it works, then I can setup an Ubuntu file server

Loving the speed... how the @#*& do they get such a dramatic improvement in performance??

Awesome.

installed Kubuntu (KDE) on laptop.
nice & fast very impressed :D
small problems, though... network drivers had to be installed, that works fine.
installs most stuff out of box, if not needs some tweaking.

I put the Koala on HP Turion64 laptop to test & see what its like.
Hmmm.... so far not really impressed, although I havent really been working on it a long time.
Its not that I dislike.... it seems to work.... maybe thats it... its plain & simple, it just works... guess I was expecting a bit more 'WOW!" factor
maybe its just the 'old' HP laptop I've got it on. Still took about 50 secs before logged in & ready to use

I want to put this new linux on my IBM laptop at home... I was quite impressed & happy with 9.04 (especially with Compiz!)...the WinXP Home is pizzing me off.... I did a fresh install only a few months ago, and already it is :( sluggish. Wife & kids using it to play & internet & facebook (ya, I know, ... wife & kids.. part of the problem :D )
So I want to be sure this is gonna work for them.

First up on HP the wireless didnt work, so took time to figure it out... fixed under hardware drivers, not activated, downloaded the driver, now works fine.
Biggest concern was dvd playback... it just would not play DVDs (mplayer, totem, gmerlin).... got XINE multimedia player, that seems to work well so far, although it bombed out when trying full screen first time, now seems fine. (apt-get install xine-ui)
"Matrix" screen saver does seem to give some stripes on the screen every now & then.
The plain grey startup screen also a bit of dissappointment, but thats easy to change.
Guess its just gonna take some time to get it setup nicely, just like one would do with windowz
will put on IBM this weekend, much rather have ubuntu on home laptop, just nicer features

You could try and use the proprietary ATI drivers instead of the free ones. That might solve your matrix screensaver issues.

With regards to DVD playback, I use VLC and for those with DRM, you need libavcodec52.

One of the things I really like about Karmic is how unobtrusive it is. You forget you're using an open-source operating system with 1000's of developers, because the integration is so tight.

Also, pay a visit to medibuntu....just do a search for it on google.

For good dvd playback you need things like libdvdnav and libdvdread etc etc. Medibuntu instructs you as to how to install of these and more to give you good media playback.

Posted earlier about having issues with the sound and network manager - well I sort of managed to work around those issues - I enabled my onboard audio to use with ubuntu and it worked straight away after booting up. As for the network manager, I just uninstalled it and I'm using Wicd.

Otherwise I've had no other issues, the environment it ridiculously fast it makes Windows look like its running on a 386.

Some features I really like are:

1. The beautiful new startup / login screen
2. The ability to add repositories and keys with one command.
3. The overall speed + boot speed.
4. Karmic sound better than Jaunty (which sounds like a slang for a medical condition)

Some things that I don't really like:

1. The entire sound system seems to be downgraded from Jaunty, not as many options as there used to be.
2. Network Manager is still a stupid and unreliable applet.

But thank you Ubuntu, and I still cant quite figure out why so many people still use windows.

For DVD playback: Check that you have restricted extras and also check for livdvdcss2 available from www.medibuntu.org

OK...just finished installing my Karmic and (clean and fresh install) and getting all my files back on. LOVING IT!. The very loud beep it used to make when shutting down and flickering with stripes across my screen when shutting down is gone and it now shuts down beautifully. I actually rather like the default theme also and will keep it as is I think. Tested my E220 modem and it seems to work 100% also. Wi Fi also worked out of the box. So far me loves Karmic :-)

put Koala on my IBM on friday... samoesa different to what it was on the HP, everything worked straight away. Put VLC as video player.
Much faster than the (better CPU) HP.... althought it could be coz of the ext4 install, instead of 'default' install i did on HP?

Only gripe so far is that the "wireless' or network connector at toolbar on top of the screen sometimes dissapears, so cannot connect to wireless network. Usually if log off and let different user log in (wife, kid, kid).
Restart fixes that problem, network back.
Must try to find the shortcut to the network app, put on desktop, so can just click on it, if it dissapears from taskbar again.

Also gotta get kid and wife used to OpenOffice as opposed to MS Office :)

Must say though... new 2010 Mandriva also looking very nice!
But I guess, its mainly the looks that catches the eye, which can be done on Ubuntu too, if u take the time to change desktop, log-in screen, etc.
