Has anybody been to Katse Dam in Lesotho? I want to visit it this december. Any pictures, comments, and tips on what to see there?

Went to Lesotho in 2012 with the intention of seeing Mohale Dam and Katse Dam. First stop was Mohale Dam - Absolutely nothing to do except the dam tour and no other facilities available i.e. complete waste land. The local tour places (Basotho pony trek etc) had long since closed.

We were told that the paved road kinda ends about 5 / 10 kms past Mohale dam so unless you have a 4x4, you won't be able to loop back to Katse Dam.

Scenery is epic though.

My experience was similar to IzZzy's. We stayed at the lodge at the top of the dam (on the hill just left of this cellphone snap). The place has run to seed. Accommodation was very platteland hotel, though the lamb curry was OK.

Excellent tar road the whole way to the dam, especially the mountain pass sections.

So you need 4X4 to move past Mohale to Katse?

Perhaps post your question on the 4x4Community website.
I'm sure there will be a bit more info available there.

Don't bother taking a tent.
You can't find a flat piece of land to pitch your tent on.
:)

Tar all the way. Rockfalls going uphill. Few potholes. Not serious. Went that route in my Atos !! Great trip . Easy.

Ficksburg, my home town.

Ah, Ficksburg. I lived there for about half a year back when I was 13/14 back when the terrorists were coming over the border to slaughter farmer and thei families.

I learned how to shoot a gun and survive a hand grenade attack there. Interesting times.

Still, there is nothing that can beat those ink-black, velvet night time silences living in the middle of a farm out there. Some nights it felt like you could reach into the sky and touch it as if putting your hand in a pond and touching its reflection.
