Hey everyone

Something that has been bothering me for some time now is, where did all the "keep left, pass Right" signs on the highway disappeared to? The reason I ask is, the signs in itself was a method of training people on the roads as to how to handle any part of the highway, whether two lanes, 3 or whatever.

I am on the road everyday and I see this every single day. Slow moving vehicles moving in the middle or right hand lanes and not going to the left lane. It would seem to me that very few people adhere to this rule.

Any thoughts?

Drivers in general leave their intelligence at home when they climb in their car. Trying to explain road rules to some is a pointless excercise.

Try the M5 in cape town - its go slow in right, overtake on left. Bloody idiots.

You are fighting a losing battle, people are 'entitled' to drive in the right lane. They will quickly tell you that they are driving the speed limit etc.. and you thus have no right and or reason to pass them.

And lets not even go to making way in the yellow area......

On a JHB 5-lane highway, 1 being the slowest and 5 the fastest, people will move left from lane 5 around 60% of the time if you come up behind them. Lane 1 is seldomly occupied as the tarmac is generally wobbly and undulating, and is mostly reserved for twats in fast German cars to overtake, before swerving across 3 lanes, and vice verca. Lane 2 is the new "slow" lane and drivers in lanes 3 & 4 will not move left..ever.

I try not to use my breaks when I'm on the highway so I only give way if the coast is clear on the left that said I try to keep on the left

in peak traffic N1 JHB/PTA the left most lane moves fastest usually at about 40km/h :D

I hate people who hog the fast lane. How difficult can it be to just move over a little to the left so I can pass you?

The other day I pulled up behind a silver Polo vivo and flashed my lights for him to just move. What does he do? Slams on brakes!!

I almost killed that day..

If I can see the person in front cannot move over - I just wait until they have a chance. If I am in any other lane, I never ask the person to move over - as that's what are slower lanes are for.

I share your pain.

This was not deliberate - When I went on holiday to Portugal, I was flashed and hooted at for driving in the second slowest lane (4 lane Highway), the guy was furious that he had to jump 2 lanes to overtake me as it is obviously forbidden to overtake on the left (in right-hand side driving countries). Only later I realised that I should have been in the slowest lane even though the road was empty.

It doesn't matter what lane you're in, you should move as far left as possible. This aids traffic flow.

imho its not so much the people in the right lane as its the people in the lane just next to it.

most people think that the keep left / pass right rule only applies to the right lane. idjots.

New school thinking believes they are entitled to the right :wtf:

Screw the old rules, yeah?

In Jhb it's just not cool to drive in the slow lane. There's some real ****wits on the roads here, I see it every day.

I'm on the roads here a lot and with a fully loaded bakkie - there's just no oomph, so sometimes you just get caught in the lane with idiots overtaking on the left leaving no friggin chance to move over.

[rant aimed at no one in particular] And No I can't ****ing see you coming up behind me in the rear view mirror, because Arsehole.. I can't ****ing see you because the bakkie is fully loaded.[/rant]

I've given up on that.

In a perfect world it would work like a bomb. In SA half the people never even heard of the rule. Trying to stick to the rules under those conditions is firstly not in your best interest and secondly will just end with you wanting to punch someone. Plus I'm legally entitled to overtake left.

Naturally I do stick to the rule where feasible though...specifically I'll move out of the way for faster cars behind me, but I won't wait (long) for slower cars to catch a wake up & move out of the way.

maybe start at the basics like stopping at red robots and waiting till it turns green.. then move up to the more "complicated" rules of the road.

Legally? I think you'll find that if you're in an accident and you were overtaking on the left at the time then your insurance will give you a big fat toffee.
