What is the best way to store and e-Sata drive and keep it safe from the perils of the modern server room? Is there a guard case similar to a USB/FireWire external drive? What would everyone recommend?

perils of a modern server room? if its a server room of any kind it has access control, auditing of entry/exits, surveillance etc etc? what do you want to protect it from?

It's external. It may get carted off site. I want it to be physically protected, as in a casing or such.

i not seen a physical external case with protection. problem is most cable lock systems, and generic ones, require you to drill to fasten the latch in place - which u cant do since the disk fits snuggly into the casing.

Go to Makro/Game/Deon and buy a R299 safe. Get a really mean drill and drill some air holes, and just enough space to fit a cable through it :) pass cables through, put drive in safe, plug in and close the safe.

Dont even know if you can drill into those bodies, but u could find out.

No, you misunderstand. The manager or whoever has access to the server room and must, on occasion, take the device off site. The security of the device is not my problem or concern, in this instance. But I'm concerned about the constant plugging/unplugging and the fragility of the drive whilst in transport. Are cases for a plain drive to plug into an e-Sata port easily available? How does this fair compared to a Firewire/USB drive?

oh hmmm. USB is by FAR more common. esp on servers. I have not worked on servers for a while so dont know if they sport e-sata ports now. I've re-plugged USB hundreds of times, it doesnt care and the plugs are robust.

and all new drives have built-in protection against movement and shock so i wouldnt worry about that. Temperature is a bigger enemy.

I've had drives in my boot while on sand roads for many KMs on corrugated roads where its vibrating terrible and they 101%.

Well I do know that I am able to use eSata and would prefer to do so because of the high data volumes. However, I'm not the one handling the device which is my concern. I just assume everyone else is an idiot. :D

true. i mean goodness knows where it will land up. if the data is sensitive i would consider imaging it every so often. u never know when the disk may land up out a window, or parked in a car at 55 deg C for day :)

The kind of enclosure that it seems you want is widely available for 3.5" drives. Great prices to be had on Vantec, Vizo, etc.

You need a off site location with a safe, security and halon gas supression for starters. How much money are you willing to spend as I can help you burn money very quickly?

Once its off site it's really not my concern any more. I just want these guys to have the ability to remove it, and transport it out of the building safely. Then it becomes their problem.
