Hey guys - so I finally went over to the dark side, and joined the apple community - Yes, I got myself an iPhone (Yes PeterCH, your dream has finally come true, i'm on my way to become an apple fanboi :p)

Ok..so yes, I'm retarded with Apple hardware & software - so i'll be needing help from you pro's!

i've managed to hook myself up with a US iTunes account all by my own already - check
I'll be jailbreaking the phone in a week or two... after i've done some heavy reading on it

First things first though - my 3G doesn't work :(

Error says: "Could not activate cellular data network - You are not subscribed to a cellular data service" when i go to weather / youtube / etc.
my 3G is enabled in the network settings

i've tried an APN of internet, iphone.vodacom.za and iphone.internet.za

what's wrong with it?

- I have a 32k SIM - is that why?
- do I need to enable something on the SIM? Vodacom tells me "iPhone detected, settings not needed" or something?
- It's a prepaid Vodacom SIM

Afaik, for the APN setting you just put in 'internet', I cant remember now :(

The shaking thing, is for when you want to move the icons around, the x on them is to remove them. Pressing the home button stops them doing that and by pressing on the screen for a few seconds they will start to shake.

Hope that made sense lol ^^

The apps and the jailbreak make it good, to a degree and at the end of the day it boils down to the apps.
Android will make inroads on Granny Smith's turf.
The capacitive screen is a plus too, but the rest of the draconian T&C's that limit the device is not worth it.

Changing the apn to internet will work, however you wont be able to use phone for internet tethering. Keep it on the iphone apn and activate it on vodacom4me to work.

Enjoy the phone, have had mine forabout two months and is truly amazing

just a tip on the jailbreaking to save you a lot of reading:

if you just bought a brand new iPhone, (i.e. came with 3.1.2 firmware out of the box), chances are about 99% that it is not fully jailbreakable. They call this a "tethered" jailbreak. Basically, every time you reboot the phone, you will have to run the jailbreak software again, otherwise you will have to restore the phone using iTunes.

This info is on the first post in the thread in my sig.

Enjoy the phone!

You need to have the iPhone api activated on your contract on Vodacom's side. Just call customer support.

Thanx guys, 3G is sorted!

I check if the weather works, itunes did something on the phone and 1 app updated too - there goes a 10mb bundle :(

at least it's working now. :)

at work I get free wifi on the iphone though, so that's good at least :D

thanx for the help guys!!

just one question (and yes, ill do some reading, but i just wanna know quick)

Will I still be able to use itunes after a jailbreak? ive got the idea that if I hack it and connect with itunes it will detect or "know" it and "brick" it or something?

my boss upgraded to a new 3GS iphone and sold his to me - it has 3.1.3 on it..... can i go back to 3.1.0 or something if there are no tools to hack 3.1.3 yet?
Model: MB489SO

it has never been jailbreaked before as he was too afraid

so basically what should one NOT do when jailbreaking it - i'm an apple n00b remember

[-]You might be in luck! You probably can do an untethered jailbreak on that! Check the 4th-5th digits of the serial number. If they are less than '45' then you are good to go.

I don't think it will let you downgrade, as Apple stopped signing the 3.1.2 firmware if i can recall correctly. Meaning it wont work.

You can jailbreak 3.1.3 at the moment, but the software is only released on Mac for now.. So you'll need to get a hold of a Mac. Alternatively, you can just find a "pwned" 3.1.3 custom firmware file on the net.

So what you would need to do it obtain this "pwned" 3.1.3 firmware file (which was made by someone using a Mac). Can find these on forums such as Xsellize (will try and find a link for you).

Then, put the phone into DFU mode mode, and in iTunes, simply hold shift while clicking on "Restore" in iTunes under the iPhone tab. Then browse to the firmware and it will restore your phone, but this time to a jailbroken state. Be sure to backup in iTunes as a restore is like a reformat (right click iPhone, backup), and you can restore from your backup after the restore.

So to round it up, find the custom 3.1.3 firmware (Make sure if it for the 3GS!!), put iPhone in DFU mode, and do as above.

If you get stuck, just press the "Restore" button without holding shift, and that will return the phone to a factory state.[/-]

A great site for tutorials is iClarified

EDIT:

[-]just rememered SnowBreeze for Windows for jailbreaking 3.1.3
Give that a shot.

I also see they have F0recast tool- which tells you whether you are able to jailbreak your phone tethered or non-tethered.

If it says "Tethered" = NO, then you are good to go!

So:

What you must do:

1) Download ForeCast tool to check if your iPhone ONLY supports a TETHERED jailbreak or not.

Using ForeCast tool:

If TETHERED = NO, then you CAN do a normal jailbreak --> this is the best. you can reboot the phone with no problems and jailbreak will retain.

IF TETHERED = YES, then you can only do a TETHERED jailbreak..

TETHERED JAILBREAK = When the iTunes recovery logo appears every time you reboot the phone after jailbreaking with blackra1n RC3 or alternative.

You have two options:

- to re-run blackra1n RC3 every time you reboot the phone and are presented with this recovery logo (which proves very inconvenient)
- to restore the phone and lose the jailbreak

[-]2) Download SnowBreeze (for Windows) to jailbreak.[/-]

i'm gonna edit out all of this info until i have clarified some things.. do not want to misguide you here.

So what are the rest of the draconian T&Cs that you're referring to?

I was using a bit of tongue and cheek there, but the iPhone has it's limitations and it's an annoyance.

The fact that A2DP Bluetooth file transfer is limited. (if at all)
The fact that that you can't attach files with e-mails.
It will only really work well with apple and not other toys.

It's mindless hype which surrounds the headset which really doesn't impress me at all.
