Hi, my friend is currently with iafrica (dialup) which comes with an email address & now he is upgrading to adsl with openweb but he would like to keep his email address with iafrica, can he do this without subscribing to iafrica?

Thanx in advance

Call them, they might allow an email only account if you have access through another company. He'll have to use Openwebs SMTP server address to send though unless IAfrica uses username/password authentication on their outbound email servers.

If he had a paid email adress which came with his dialup, the answer is no. He can't keep his email adress :)

But maybe Juggy has a point

Isn't IAfrica one of those ISP's that were devoured by MWeb? If it is then he'll have to contact MWeb, I think they had an offer to keep your email address active for R70-odd per month, or something to that effect.

That's correct, iAfrica is part of MWeb, so either pay for the email address or pay for MWeb ADSL, HAHAHA!

Iafrica/Mweb dont allow you to just keep your email... youd have to keep your whole dial-up account. I tried but couldnt do it..

What buggers! They used to let you keep it... that's such a cheap tactic for keeping clients!

You can keep your address by taking the R70 option which gives you access to your mailbox and three hours dialup a month, just email them and find out. iAfrica (polka, tiscali & others) is owened by mweb. See this post

R70 a month for 1 email box and 3 hours dialup??? That's extotion... We charge our users R75 per month for ulimited dialup access and 5 email addresses... and they complain about how expensive it is

it;s 5 mailboxes with four aliases for the primary address, plus access to mweb value added member services,

Thats why it is it better to have a web-based account like Gmail for these type of situations.

You say that like it makes it worth it :D

Couldn't aggree more... should never tie yourself in with 1 ISP.

Besides that, it costs R50 per year to register your own domain, and you can host your mail under that for next to nothing.

I personally don't think it's worth it, That's why I applied for cancelation of my mweb account, I don't think I ever used any of the vaule added services, mweb I checked my account it says that it has been posted (to who???).

I use gmail as my personal email account and a google hosted account for my company on a different domain.

Totally agree as in the UK you have AOL whcih is Mweb's equivalent and they said you get all these freebies. Stuff that just give me my connection and I can get all those freebies from other sites on the web. I used to work for mweb and I will never get a account from them ever.
