Keeping up with the Joneses

I don't know if any of you folk have a family member / friend like this, but I find it amusing how some people come hell or high water, death or debt, will make the hugest effort to get one up on someone else no matter what.

I have a family member who is like this, if you buy a pair of Nikes, trues bob next week he will be wearing the same pair but will tell you "WOW MAN, we got the same excellent taste in shoes" This actually happened by the way

I just don't understand some people, they are so lonely and unhappy in life that they have to try and better what you have / what you do / where you go away / how much you have. I am not materialistic so having a bigger fancier car, or fancier shoes really doesn't mean a whole lot to me. However it does get a little tiresome. Its like watching a a dog chase his tail, funny at first but not something you want to watch all the time

But what do you think actually goes on in people likes this brains? Are they just so shallow that they will do anything to get one up? I don't get it.

Yeah I'm going on a cruise at the end of the year and some people are already hinting on going on one as well next year. Nobody asked them not to think of it first

It's actually funny for me that their lives are so sad.

we had a neighbour ...they drove new cars ...had the best tv and surround sound, dstv the works ...

but they never had food to eat and it would always be played loud so the neighbourhood can hear

I hear you and you are right, we learn things from other people and thats good. But what I am getting at is people who spot that you have bought something or gone somewhere or whatever and they almost have heart palpitations and then HAVE to do the same thing or one better.

I don't mind people doing as they please, even if they get an idea from me. Just don't make a big deal out of it as if to show people that you can buy or do things too. Nothing good ever comes out of trying to undermine somebody else.

Yeah no, thats not what I am getting at. Some of my best purchases, holidays etc have been because friends have bought / been there etc.

I am speaking about people who go green with envy when they see you wearing a new pair of shoes for example, and make it their life mission to either copy you or get one up on you.

Thats how I feel, I mean imitation is the ultimate flattery as they say, but when you start getting competitive to the point where you start to look like a twit, then it just gets annoying.

I think its the human ego as well as a survival strategy.Its the same with parents who brag about their smart kids.
We need tools to show we can survive better than the next man in the same way animals exhibit superiority traits about territory and breeding.

Nothing wrong at all but yeah some people take it to far and make it very obvious that they are all of a sudden insecure and feel like a lesser person.

That really grinds me I had 'friends' who had no personality or individual identity and decided to imitate mine. So Poor! Be original FFS. Recently whats been annoying is when people double my age ask me where i shop and buy the same things :erm:
