Keith Richards: I Don't Own an iPod

He's rock royalty and likes to keep it old-school: Keith Richards says he doesn't own an iPod.

The Rolling Stones guitarist says he isn't a fan of the ultra-popular music device.

"I don't have an iPod. ... I still use CDs or records actually. Sometimes cassettes. It has much better sound; a much better sound than digital," he said in a recent interview.

The 69-year-old believes music lovers are "all being shortchanged" with the sound that comes out of an iPod, launched in 2001.

"My old lady's got one. My kids have got them. I say, 'Look me up this.' Or, 'Oh I like that. Check me that,'" he said. "I know what these things can do. I'm not totally anti-them."

The Rolling Stones' "50 & Counting Tour" kicks off Friday in Los Angeles. The Stones released their self-titled debut in 1964, and while Richards has accepted that the music industry is digitally driven today, he's not completely OK with it.

"They're sucked into it and they can't get out of it, nor can we; so is the public," he said. "There's something missing there, but it's the price of the future I guess."

I also have never had an iPod.

But ... I stream and I use torrents and I rip and I convert ...

... and I have just over 1 GB of music ... pathetic ain't it.

I'm not really a music collector.

I like music, I just don't collect it.

My father was seriously into his music & spent seriously obscene amounts on sound systems.
He always insisted records has a better & warmer sound than digitally recorded & stored music. I always argued (while clinging to an iPod) but he proved he point a couple of times.
Having said that, on my normal sound system I could not tell the difference, but on his ultra high end audiophile stuff there was a clear difference. Admittedly, the one pair of speakers were massive - kinda need a concert hall for them - but the sound is too too sweet - size does matter after all !! :D
 
Your dad is right. There is a beeg difference.

But having massive speakers isn't necessary. With a decent amp (under R50K), the sound from four antique Bose 901s is almost matchless.

I must also confess to not ever having had an iPod.

I have a pair of those 901s in my study. They must be at least 15yrs old but sound fantastic.
My old man would drone on about speaker enclosures forever. The speakers i referred to are duntech sovereign's. They weigh in at over 100kg a piece !

It's a record label media machine churning out press releases before that 50 & Counting Tour which kicks off on Friday and that's really, really what they want you to know.

There was a time when they wouldn't have needed this but, sadly, they're competing with Bieber and Gaga now... Makes me want to go eat hot coal.
 
It was in the SAPA News Feed and it has certainly generated discussion. And with Apple's recent announcement of a debt distribution and low earnings it can certainly fall under CA.
