You won't find cheaper.

Cool, thanks . I'll check it out.

Any idea what I can expect to pay for a few kitchen cupboards with a worksurface on top and then a few cupboards to mount on the wall?

Based on those prices I am looking at R5000 without a sink :(

Damn my tiny kitchen in my flat cost me R22,000 just for the cupboards!!! But that included installation and they were "foil wrapped super wood". The ones on that site are obviously melamine covered chipboard. If this is a long term investment think super wood..... at least.

Damn we really have hijacked this thread! :) Sorry OP

Hmm and all that old meat and chicken and other food stuff that penetrate the porous wood only to resurface when next you prepare another meal on it? No thanks... i will rather invest in new knives every few years! :)
For a start you could try washing the board - soap and water do a great job, as does vinegar, Miltons, even nuking it for half a minute. :)

A good set of knives should last generations - not just a few years.

Now, just like Telkom, it gets complicated:D

Work surfaces- cheapest is plastic/formica that looks like marble or granite

Granite is next up- Rustenburg is the cheapest.

Dumb people go for Marble but forget it has more holes than a sieve- even sealed it will stain. But the people with marble kitchens don't cook so that's ok.

Then there's the latest- crushed quartz mix- called "ceasarstone" and other names.- very expensive and hard.

Then there's good ol stainless steel.

You'll need splashbacks too.

So many options.

More options

Do you want veneers over the cupboard carcasses or just plain matching melamine. Or do you want solid wood doors?

Unlike Telkom, I can't be bothered to list all the kitchen options, but suffice it to say with basics that look acceptable you should get out alive after spending 10-15K appliances not included and you doing own labour.

Krikey moses! Well that is a lot more than I would want to spend! This is a rented flat :p

Apologies for continued hijack OP, but this still has to do with kitchens at least ;)

Eish :( That is millions.

I think I shall hassle the landlady rather in that case. But she will NOT be keen, I know now already.

You definitely should.... you could spend a fortune on the kitchen and when the lease is up she gives you the boot! She will benefit after all from the investment. At least offer the option of doing up the kitchen in exchange for a reduction in rental...

Has the condition deteriorated since you have stayed there or has it always been buggered? You can always claim it has become unusable....

It is pretty unusable - the cupboards are the original ones from when the flats were built in like the 60s :o They are woodenm which is rotten for the most part, damp and has cockroaches living in parts of it...

Problem is, our landlady will drag her feet when it comes to getting it done and then she might have to put the rent up :(
