On my office computer after lunch:

If I hit 1 2 3 4 5, instead is typed ! @ # $ %, in other words as if the shift is being held down

Typing a s d f is ok, lower case appears

Pressing SHIFT and 1 2 3 4 5 still gets ! @ # $ %

Sticky keys is not on

I plugged another (USB) keyboard in and it did the same

?????

Well, control panel says it is a US keyboard. Thing is, it was working regularly this morning, then when I came to input some figures, these symbols appeared. It took me several minutes to figure what was going on

You might need to read your keyboard details in the manual.
There are often key-combinations unique to each laptop/brand.
You possibly activated one of those.
Are all your letters in caps? If not, then not a jammed shift key.

Also you should be able to select the SA english keyboard.

Did you lock your screen when you went to the loo or to get coffee? In my office we often change keyboard languages on the people who don't lock their screens.

CAPS LOCK on and sticky SHIFT key will give such beaviour.

We switched on sticky keys (hit the shift key 5 times), activated it and pressed SHIFT. Then everything came in upper case and the numbers, ie 1 produced a ! and so on. CAPS LOCK on should still give regular numbers, only letters are in upper case.

In the meantime I have moved to another PC since all the work is on the server while the IT hardware guy (who is also bamboozled) tries to figure it out.

Yip, Sticky SHIFT key together with CAPSLOCK. Use sticky second time, it reverts to default. :)

You guys are taking guesses.

STICKY KEYS and CAPSLOCK produces QWERTY from the letters and 12345 from the numbers. If you press SHIFT with STICKY KEYS on, then QWERTY appears and !@#$%. But if you switch off STICKY KEYS, this computer reverts to qwerty but !@#$%

The hardware guy reset the CMOS and loaded default values, and it is now correct
