I'm subscribed to a PC Mag newsletter, I got this via email recently, which left me wondering, why are they so pathetic?

I have to confess, I don't really know myself how to track, avoid, trace or remove keyloggers.

I googled and saw a few anti keylogger apps, but most cost money. I also think that those anti keyloggers are actually logging themselves ;) :D :p

Any tips to show me that PC Mag is full of dust?

I can live with Windows Defender. If you look at it's history and where M$ bought the system from, you'll see it was the best Antispyware app out there, I have to say however, was :p ;) :D

I think I'll install Spybot S&D and AVG once I really suspect something, I don't want to install now, it'll create more lag than needed ;)
 
WD is actually pretty good, there's no need to slag it just because it carries the MS name ;)

Yip, but MS really took it a notch down, the previous company improved on it, MS just made it Windows Integrated, it has really lost a lot of it's punch ;)
 
Pretty much any of the decent software out there should pick up keyloggers. I've used kaspersky, mcafee, avg, spybot, adaware - all do a fairly decent job.

There's also a host of other utils you can use if you suspect something suspect on your computer - autoruns, filemon, process viewer and bunch of other useful tools from the ex sysinternals.

NOD is doing well. But anti-virus isn't enough to be protected against keyloggers and most of the anti-keylogging programs or those offering such protection, sorry for the word, are crap. The mentioned above anti-viruses are all pretty good, but it's a delusion that they maybe enough to fight keyloggers. It's better to install some specialized tool in addition to anti-virus,Spysweeper, PrivacyKeyboard, Spyware doctor or smth. like that. I use PrivacyKeyboard for my home PC, I tried various anti-keyloggers, Privacy blocked more than any other, so I chose it, though I sometimes run alternative security programs on other PCs.

AVs only catch keyloggers if that specific one is already in the signature database. If it is slightly modified, custom written or polymorphic then a signature based AV will not catch it. Take the ABSA online banking keylogger thing some time back.

For something that's not signature based, you need to check whether the routine used by keyloggers are being used (Hooks, Getasynckeystate etc).

This might help, but lots of legit programs monitor the keyboard too, so its a bit hit&miss. And if its combined with a clever rootkit then its always miss.

The other way to catch keyloggers is via the firewall when the program is trying to send the info back to Russia.

There was a revelation to me and it said you were doing fine,Nod:rolleyes: But to tell the truth, I'm from CIA:cool: I'm watching you;) everyone of you:D:D Hope you haven't caught any viruses(flu is so dangerous nowadays), BTW I've got some magic pills, just in case:D:D

If to speak seriously, I reckon that signature bases are limiting to a certain extent, that's why I prefer also to run the program based on heuristic mechanisms, like that Privacykeyboard I was talking about. If I'm not mistaken the software using heuristic principles of work is able to catch even a custom built keylogger. I'm trying to find some more advanced software than the one I installed, but I'm not lucky yet:rolleyes:
