2022 Kia Niro to be revealed tomorrow with bold new look

Big-selling crossover will be reinvented with styling influenced by the radical HabaNiro concept

Kia will unwrap the second-generation Niro tomorrow (25 November), the latest in a series of important unveilings from the marque as it transitions to becoming a "sustainable mobility solutions provider".

Just a week after showing its radical EV9 large SUV concept, Kia will present the production-ready version of its reinvented compact crossover at the Seoul Mobility Show.

The Niro is a hugely important car for Kia, accounting for 61,000 sales in the UK alone since its 2016 launch and spawning the e-Niro, the brand's first electric production car and the precursor to a whole family of bespoke EVs.

Kia Niro

Kia Corporation has revealed the all-new Kia Niro at the 2021 Seoul Mobility Show, which aims to make sustainable mobility accessible for everyone.

The all-new Niro embodies Kia's commitment to building a more sustainable future. As an integral part of Kia's growing eco-friendly line up, the new model will appeal to the complex needs of sustainability-conscious consumers.

"Kia continues to take steps towards a more sustainable future, inviting everyone to join the movement into the new mobility era," said Ho Sung Song, President and CEO of Kia. "The all-new Kia Niro makes it simple to practice a sustainable lifestyle with its eco-friendly materials, advanced technology and electric powertrains while it also fulfills the practical needs of customers."

Completely redesigned from the ground up, the all-new Kia Niro has been developed under the company's Opposites United design philosophy, fulfilling 'Joy for Reason' ethos. It takes inspiration from nature in design and the choice of colour, material, and finish to strike a perfect balance between an environmentally responsible approach and a future-oriented outlook.

Kia Niro debuts as stylish and Eco-friendly compact crossover

The all-new Kia Niro has been officially unveiled at this year’s Seoul Mobility Show as a continuation of the hybrid-electric compact crossover. The new model brings with it an updated design language together with a series of efficient powertrains.

This Kia Niro has been completely redesigned from the ground-up and developed under the company’s Opposites United design philosophy, fulfilling ‘Joy for Reason’ ethos. The new product sources inspiration from the 2019 Habaniro concept with crossover looks and high-tech two tone body. A wide pillar at the rear aims to enhance air flow to improve aerodynamics and blends into the boomerang-shaped rear taillights.

Keeping in-line with sustainability, the new Kia Niro sports recycled materials inside the cabin. The headlining is made from recycled wallpaper, the seats are made from Bio PU with Tencel from eucalyptus leaves, and BTX free paint is used on the door panels to minimise the impact on the environment and reduce waste.

The off-centre dash curves around the front occupants with horizontal and diagonal lines opposing each. The centre-console has been designed to be easy to operate and features the electronic dial-type shift lever. The audio-visual screen and air vents are incorporated within the diagonal gaps of the modern dash design, while ambient mood lighting heightens the senses and creates a welcoming interior.

New 2022 Kia Niro brings rugged 4x4 looks and all-new interior

Popular crossover is reborn in line with Kia's new-age design ethos, retaining hybrid and EV options

The new, second-generation Kia Niro is official, introducing a bold new design inside and out for one of Europe’s most popular crossovers.

Ahead of a market launch next year – just six years after the arrival of the current car – the new Niro has been shown for the first time at the Seoul motor show, revealing how the Nissan Juke rival has been brought into line with Kia’s evolved design language.

Kia has confirmed that the new arrival, like the current car, will be offered with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure-electric powertrains, although the Mk2 e-Niro will remain separate from the firm’s line of ‘EV’-badged bespoke electric cars and will not use the E-GMP platform reserved for those models. An evolution of the current e-Niro’s single-motor, front-wheel-drive powertrain is expected, although the shorter-range car could be discontinued in light of higher demand for the 282-mile 64kWh battery option.

Efficiency and performance boosts are expected across the range. Kia has already confirmed that the plug-in hybrid car now uses data from the navigation system to switch between combustion and EV power where appropriate – shutting the engine down outside schools, for example. The 1.6-litre petrol engine currently used in combustion-powered Niro variants is also likely to be carried over but is unlikely to be boosted to give the same 261bhp combined output as the new Sportage PHEV.

New Kia Niro debuts with new face and sustainable materials

In a press release out of Seoul, Kia officially unveiled an overhauled Niro, designed from ground up with its 2019 HabaNiro concept in mind.

This is apparent in the Niro’s redesigned front end that embodies Kia’s signature “tiger face” that now extends from the hood through the lower fender, accented by “heartbeat” LED daytime running lights (DRL).

A major focus relayed by the Kia team at the debut was sustainability and a cleaner future for transportation.

The automaker presented this commitment via the interior of the new Niro, which features headlining made from recycled wallpaper, seats made from bio-based polyurethane, and Tencel (textile) made from eucalyptus leaves.

Lastly, the door panels were painted with water-based, BTX free paint to minimize environmental impact and waste. Kia president and CEO Sung Song spoke at the event in Seoul:

Kia continues to take steps towards a more sustainable future, inviting everyone to join the movement into the new mobility era.

The all-new Kia Niro makes it simple to practice a sustainable lifestyle with its eco-friendly materials, advanced technology, and electric powertrains while it also fulfils the practical needs of customers.

This is the new, second-generation Kia Niro

All-new crossover launches in 2022, available as a hybrid or EV

Kia has revealed its brand-new, second-generation Niro crossover, and you’d be forgiven for not seeing any design lineage between the two models. Quite a departure from the first-gen car, you’ll agree.

Indeed, Kia tells us the new Niro has been completely redesigned, and takes the 2019 Habaniro concept into its production-ready flanks. That trademark ‘tiger face’ has been modified too, sweeping across the front and round to the front arches. It’s a bold look, complemented by those new LEDs sitting just beneath it.

It’s a fairly upright, squared-off silhouette, and while we haven’t been treated to proper pictures of the rear, there are vertical taillights said to highlight “aerodynamics and technology”.

As you’d expect from any self-respecting modern crossover, the interior offers much sustainability in the shape of recycled cabin materials (the headlining, for example, is made from old wallpaper). The dash has taken a significant uptick too: gone are the acres of black plastic, and instead there’s a large screen spanning the driver and centre console. Mercifully, it appears Kia has kept in a couple of physical knobs for the temp controls.

Kia Debuts The 2023 Niro With A Rather ... Interesting Redesign

Visually, there's a lot going with the second generation of Kia’s EV crossover.

For Kia to call the new Niro’s exterior design a refresh is an understatement. Designed with the brand’s “Opposites United” philosophy and drawing heavily from the 2019 HabaNiro concept (which should’ve told us everything we needed to know—I mean its right there in the name), the design is well ... interesting.

Shown at the 2021 Seoul Mobility Show, sustainability is the name of the game with the new Niro as Kia seeks to make moves towards appealing to those who live their lives eco-friendly.

The front fascia is a reimagining of Kia’s “tiger face.” Following a design trend set by vehicles like the Hyundai Kona and Santa Fe, Chevy Trailblazer, etc, the front is accented by LED DRLs and headlights sitting below the hood line. The Niro has always been more of a wagon (with the Niro at just four inches taller than a Mini Clubman and four inches lower than Kia’s own Seltos) than a full-on crossover. Seemingly to reinforce the “I’m a crossover, not a wagon” look, black body trim extends down the facia and along the body, giving the Niro a two-tone paint treatment that designers call high tech.

New 2022 Kia Niro: fresh details on all-electrified crossover

Nissan Qashqai rival grows slightly and adopts upgraded version of hybrid drivetrain

New details of the second-generation Kia Niro have been revealed ahead of the crossover's market launch in the coming months.

The reinvented Nissan Qashqai rival was revealed late last year, but only limited details of its technical specifications and equipment were shared at the time.

Now, as it prepares to launch the model in Korea, Kia has confirmed that the new Niro is slightly larger than its predecessor, measuring 4420mm long, 1825mm wide and 1545mm tall – increases of 65mm, 20mm and 10mm respectively.

Alongside the resultant increase in cabin room, the battery has been moved out of the boot cavity to sit alongside the traction battery under the rear seats, increasing boot capacity by 15 litres to 451 litres.

The Niro will be launched with hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric powertrains, but Kia has so far only detailed the hybrid, which will use the same system as the outgoing car.

2022 Kia Niro offers a glimpse into the brand’s sustainable future

With the 2022 Kia Niro, the Korean manufacturer intends for this to be statement of intent for the future, a future of sustainability and efficiency.

No stranger to dabbling with sustainable mobility solutions, Kia has now revealed the all-new Niro which forms an integral part of Kia’s growing eco-friendly model line-up. Aimed at sustainability conscious consumers, the Niro features eco-friendly materials furnishing the interior and state-of-the-art electrified powertrains and features all packaged utilising the award winning Opposites United design philosophy.

A selection of different powertrains can be chosen for the Niro including hybrid electric (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric (BEV) options. Assisting the HEV model is the familiar Smartstream 1.6-litre GDI engine which enables competitive fuel efficiency claimed at 4.8l/100km. Information on the PHEV and zero emission BEV models will be revealed at a later date.

While the Smartstream gasoline engine found in the HEV is rated with a maximum power output of 77 kW with 144 N.m of torque, when combined to the 32 kW permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that number is increased to 104 kW. The transmission coupled to the engine is a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that has been carefully engineered and optimised to increase efficiency and reduce weight.

A regenerative braking system is also equipped on the Niro which allows the powertrain to recuperate kinetic energy which increases efficiency and range. Using a built-in road radar which provides gradient and surface information, the system allows the car to harvest the maximum amount of energy from its brakes while bringing the vehicle to a gentle halt.

New 2022 Kia Niro swaps platform for performance boosts

Official details of Kia's Mk2 Nissan Juke rival reveal complete technical overhaul

The second-generation Kia Niro, which will be offered with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full-electric powertrains, has been “redesigned from the ground up” to meet growing competition, according to the firm’s bosses.

With styling inspired by the HabaNiro concept car, the new machine – which was first revealed late last year – will go on sale in the UK later this month, with first deliveries due in July. The electric version is expected to arrive around August.

While the Niro builds on the styling of its predecessor, it is actually built on a new Hyundai Motor Group platform. While the first-generation Kia Niro used the J Eco-Car architecture, the new model is the first Kia to sit on the new K3 platform currently used by the Elantra saloon. That platform is designed for electrified powertrains.

The platform switch means the Niro has grown slightly: it is 65mm longer, with the wheelbase increased by 20mm to slightly increase interior space.

The hybrid version will use a 1.6-litre petrol engine mated to a 43bhp electric motor, giving a total output of 139bhp and 199lb ft of torque. The plug-in hybrid features the same engine paired with a larger 83kW electric motor, raising output to 180bhp. The PHEV’s electric motor is powered by an 11.1kWh battery – up from 8.9kWh in the old model – giving an extended EV-only range of 40.3 miles.

Technical specifications for the 2022 Kia Niro PHEV And EV Released

The second-generation Kia Niro was introduced in November 2021, however we were only afforded a mere glimpse into Kia’s new EV and PHEV model – no technical details were released.

In January, we were given just that, but only for the PHEV, but now the Korean manufacturer has divulged details on both the plug-in hybrid and the pure EV.

The PHEV will make use of the same 1,6-litre petrol motor as the HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) and in both models, the motor is linked to. anew dual-clutch, six-speed automatic transmission which is now 2,3 kg lighter than before. This comes as a result of removing the reverse gear, the duties of which are now carried out by the vehicle’s electric powertrain.

In terms of the motor, the Niro PHEV will now have a 62 kW motor which replaces the HEV’s 32 kW unit. As a result, output is increased from 102 kW to 134 kW.

The Niro PHEV now features a 11,1 kWh battery pack as opposed to the HEV’s 8,9 kWh battery pack which will now allow for a 65 km electric-only range as per WLTP.

Kia Niro EV specs arrive - new design and platform, same battery and power

Kia has finally released details about the new Niro. For starters, it's no longer called the e-Niro, but rather the Niro EV, to go along with Kia's recent, and much better, naming convention. The model's multi powertrain lineup will thus consist of Niro HEV, Niro PHEV, and Niro EV.

The Kia Niro EV is the first car to be based on Hyundai Motor Group's new K3 platform, which has been designed for electrified and fully-electric powertrains from the ground up.

The Kia Niro EV is slightly bigger than its predecessor in all dimensions - it's 4420mm long, 1825mm wide, 1570mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2720mm.

However, in terms of battery and power, the new Niro EV is about the same as its predecessor. It uses a 64.8 kWh battery paired to a 150kW (204hp) electric motor, producing 255nm (188 lb-ft) of torque. It goes from 0 to 62 mph in 7.8 seconds and has a top speed of 167 km/h.

This Is The 2023 Kia Niro's True Face And Everyone Needs To Know

You can ruin (or improve) the front of Kia's latest fuel-efficient crossover with one simple Photoshop edit.

Every new Kia is a little weird. The Soul is the poster child of weird. The Carnival is weird because it’s a minivan that goes to great lengths to convince people it isn’t one. The Telluride has those bendy taillights clearly inspired by the Maserati 3200GT, and the Seltos is outwardly pretty handsome and thoroughly normal, except it has the name of a brand of mints people stopped popping in the ’90s.

The theme continues with the 2023 Niro. The real five-tool player in the Kia lineup, the Niro will come in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric varieties. The interior looks much sleeker than its predecessor’s; I’m sure it’ll be relatively pleasant for an economy car. None of those things make the Niro weird.

The Niro’s exterior makes it weird. It’s like the designers took the basic silhouette of a small crossover and garnished it with as many graphic elements as possible. And while it sort of works on the back with those novel boomerang-shaped tail lamps meeting the deviated-color C-pillars, things get really strange at the front.

Lots of new cars today do the split-headlight thing. There’s usually a strip of daytime running lights or LEDs up top, underscored by the projector that’s actually going to illuminate the road ahead when it gets dark out. It was a neat idea when Nissan and Jeep introduced it on their SUVs in the early 2010s, but it’s gotten a little stale since every other automaker decided to crib it. Even BMW’s stealing the motif for the new X7. Hey — they couldn’t possibly make modern Bimmers look uglier than they already do, so why not?
