Kick The Door Down

If you look at this from a larger picture above and take out the elements of "personal gain" and look at SA History and our leaders of today. 10 years ago was revolution. Freedom for the black nation. They all fought and struggled together.

Today the "Black Elite"... well you tell me.... Have they all of a sudden forgoten about their fellow brotheren?? (PS: BTW I am not generalising... in this case i'll narrow it down specifically to Telkom Shareholders)

The whole point of fighting for freedom is to uplift the quality of life for "your" people. Be it financial, educatioin, etc..

Whats happening here at the moment is that they are holding their own people back. Its a slap in the face for them. They know it. We know it. But unfortunately the poor dont know it. The middle class like us are stuck in the middle. If things carry on the way they carrying on in this country with the crime and corruption.. it will end up being a sad state of affairs.

Government want to manufacture, package, serve and eat their own cake. Unfortunately in a captilistic environment it does not work like that. Elements of communism (STATE Owned Parastatals) dont belong in a Democratic regime. Thats why we having so many "conflicts of interest".
E.G. Converence Bill, ICASSA Ammendment Bill, Being pulled over by the Metro and getting arrested (Which by our constitution is illegal). etc etc etc.

Till one actually solves the problem deep within and buils a solid "Governmental" structure with which the country can leverage off then issues like this will be solved easily. At the moment there is so no such thing. Our country is in a bad state. There is good and bad in our country but at the moment the bad outweighs the good (crime, corruption, profiteering, etc). The sad part of all of this is that the potential this country has is phenomanal.

Unfortunately our leaders only think short term. They are not visionaries. They think for now and they think for their pockets. What we need is a no bull**** taking leader who can envision, guide and steer us into the future.

At the moment everyone is quibaling about the small petty things that matter now and not in the long term. Yes God willing eventually the telecoms market will become cheaper and more competition will be introduced, but the underlying fact that our countries poor leadership, pathetic law enforcing and administerial skills..... well all i can say... "May God have mercy on our children".

Bwana.. now your speculating, with whats and ifs.. What if one of these kids become the next Hitler, or Jack the ripper? You dont know I dont know.

What I do know is we stand to loose the SKA bid now because of our airways, if we do win the bid, Goverment will have to catch a wake up, our Science minister will make sure of that and if you look he is doing a DAMN good job so far and one of the only ministers who work his butt off to give back to the community, not like our MoC or "maybe" MoC in 20 years.
Illegal broadband will not make them wake up, it might teach the kids that to get somewhere in life you have to break the law though :( see now I'm speculating!

Moosag.. not sure if you agree or not.. but the SKA is for our future.. small time quick illegal wireless is for the now.. not for our tomorrow

Sorry i shoulda said that i do agree with your argue in that sense. My opinion above and my intention was not to agree or imply against breaking the law is a good thing in this short time frame. Its wrong. Laws are there to keep us in check. Breaking rules and regulations consequences in law enforcement. i.e. u steal you get locked up.

And yes the Science Minister is doing a good job. There are alot of government officials out there doing a great job. Its very unfortunate that the good goes un-noticed. Or should I say its overshadowed by the bad. Specifically media related. They only publish the "bad" stuff.

And yes the SKA is exquisitely important. My only problem is that the bad outweighs the good. Law enforcement in this country is amongst the laughing stock of the world. Although we have 1 of the best constitutions in the world. Unfortunately we dont have anyone enforcing and abiding by it.

My fear is that if peoples mind frames dont change... (When I say that I mean .. for e.g. take the SA Cancer Association... in short somones pocketing sick ppl's money). Peoples minds are in the frame of we'll do what we want, how we want, its our country, etc...

Take for e.g. the police. They are one of the biggest organized crime units in the country. Some are good, some are damn good, but the majority are just plain old rubbish. All I am saying is that if ppl's mind sets dont start changing to a more postive and ethical future.. then its going to be a long and narrow road ahead. And I am a firm believer that no one has the right to break any law regardless of colour, race, agenda, whatever.

Coming back to the point about wireless connections in rural areas. I put down to a simple thing. Judging by his actions his intentions seem good (i am speculating here). I am a firm believer in relegion. I dont judge anyone for anything they do because I dont have the right to. If I were all so grand and good then yes... but who is?? In a case like this I take my hat off to the man for trying to uplift his own ppl. In the case of the law i dont agree that he should have broken it. But at the same time i have a problem with the rules and regulations set out by those who made them. So its 2 fold. I leave it to the courts to decide. I am not 1 to judge anyone. If the mans intentions were pure and in his heart he felt like he was doing the right thing (and when i say rite thing I dont mean according to law. I mean according to human rights/relegion. Because man made laws that are set out dont always favour everyone) then good for him.

And the oweness is on our leaders to provide what Mr Viko is trying to provide for his people. And hopefully they will do so for all the right reasons.

@Kalvaer

Setting up community wifi equals murder? Murder is not just illegal. A government decides what is illegal and everything else is legal. That is the way rational law works. Thus a government can dictate that going to the toilet at 5pm is illegal for some quasi religious reason but being illegal would never make it equivalent to murder. An oppressive government may even legalize murder when it suits it's agenda. Murder is more than illegal. It violates one of the pillars of civilized society; that of the right to life. It is an attack not only on the individual whose life has been taken, but on the society as a whole and thus cannot be tolerated.

I fear for your state of mind if you believe murder is only wrong when it is illegal. I suggest you take some time to think about the difference between good governance, oppressive regimes and the laws they create before you start blindly following the law of the land. A primary function of democracy is the responsibility of the people to regulate their government and prevent abuse.

Now, I have a question for you. You keep mentioning the SKA. I did some reading on the SKA and discovered that it requires a 100km diameter interference free zone around it. This means that it will be built 50km beyond the boundary of radio interference sources, usually the nearest settlement as cellphones are classed as interference on the website. How does community WIFI, with a range of around 5km to 10km, affect the SKA? I would think that settlement placement would be a bigger threat unless you expect that all nearby settlements are to be radio free?

Please think on this a bit.

Peace.

Hmmm How many times must I specifically state that the murder comparison was an example used and was a large exaggeration, and then my state of mind gets questioned when people don’t read what I say:confused:   Reading comprehension is not required when somebody spells it out? Or do I need to AGAIN spell it out? and do I need to explain my last few posts every time somebody doesn't read? You did however say exactly what I did right back at me in certain terms. Murder is wrong no matter what.. Same as breaking the law, it does not matter if it is stealing a pen at CNA, or stabbing somebody, The degree of the crime might be questionable, the fact that it was a crime and "wrong" does not change.

I also specifically mentioned that the SKA was one example, There are hundreds more, If the SKA is to be anything like current installations then even things like Cell phones will not be allowed to be used in the area (take a drive to HartRao sometime will you) The average WiFi might have a 5-10 km radius, though it can extend further, this can be influenced my many factors such as atmospheric conditions, to line of site between points.
I have seen where people I know have been able to push their Wiireless to up to 30 km's with the correct equipment and locations, and are currently trying to push it further.

Sigh.. and I will again say, the problem just gets worse.. the more people do it the worse the situation gets, one person doing it for the "poor" and getting away with it, only opens more loop holes in an already flawed system that will aggravate the problem. Something like the SKA is designed to pick up radio signals millions upon millions of km's away, What do you think littered airways 100km's away will do? The fact that they are illegal or not, does not matter.. It just makes it worse, and its still wrong.. no matter what your reasoning, and how good it makes you feel. Must I also again state that I love what Vico are doing.. But I disagree with how it is being done.. Or was that not read the last how many times I said it?

Put yourself in Mr Viko's shoes. Do you think he really even know swhat an SKA is??

In retrospect this country has alot of issues to solve before it even thinks about setting up something like an SKA. There is still mass loads poverty and the rate of un-employment is just to large. You need to look at this from a reallistic point of view and not an ideallistic point of view. Something like an SKA has good beneficial effects for the long term. But the money that would be spent on something like an SKA, I personally think should be spent on the upliftment of this country. Being able to pickup radio signals 100000000 miles away really doesnt put food in the poor mans mouth. It might excite you but it still doesnt justify why so much money should be spent on that. In short this country should worry about its current affairs and problems before it tries to act too big for its own boots.

I actually had a VERY long conversation with some people on friday night with regards to this (Top scientists in their field from SA and Germany).

They where also of the opinion that the money could be spent better, though after more probing it always turned out that they would rather have the money spent in their line of work which would help them again  . As a point of interest.. the SKA is not in my line of work either and I dont have any shares or will have anything to do with it at all.

The point about picking up the signals millions of km's was not that it was exciting, but more to prove the point the RFI would be a problem. One thing though that everyone I spoke to on friday agreed on (while not 100% and all with varies other options of how it could be done "right"), was that the SKA stood the greatest chance to bring about a new era of science and technology to the world, and that the at the spin off for it would certainly be education levels of South Africans drastically climbing thorugh the roof.... The long time frame to reach this though and the current state of affairs in SA seemed to be a big problem

Great.. didn't know Telkom where involved.. I guess my whole idea goes out the window then with regards to us even standing a half decent chance :)

On another point though, what frequency do most current Private WiFi configurations run at? and what would be the effect of this frequency being "abused" or rather flooded with data?

Have a look at this wikipedia article - good basic info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiFi

There is actually quite a lot there I didn't know thanks :) Of interest as well is the WiFi of 500 km  (even if the page is set for deletion it proves that WiFi is possible at large distance based on atmospheric and location conditions? )

My main reason for asking as well was that AFAIK, the frequency band used in SA is the same as our medical band.. Of which I cant find any info? Dont know if I'd like to be the one to be in hospital when a problem arises with that!
