Hi

I am looking for simple budget tablet for a kid. It will be used for playing games and watching youtube. I have been looking around and there seems to be a few dedicated options like the Kurio tab 2 and the Polaroid.

Other options for me are the Samsung Tab 3 lite and Asus Zenpad C.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am looking to spend around R1500

What age?

Both my girls have these and they are glued to them, they're not slow at all. If you're willing to wait they sometimes feature as a daily deal at R899

Might be a good idea to go the wifi only route - no 3G connection.

I very very highly recommend the Leapfrog Epic. It is an android based tablet with a kids friendly "home screen". More like a home playground. The games are expensive but extremely well made and with a educational focus.

What I really love about it is you can install normal Android apps on it too, so I put Kodi on my son's and he can stream all the cartoons we have on the PC. You can also put an SD card in it and load media on there.

The body is sturdy with a nice and big rubber edge so it should survive much better than a normal tablet.

Give it a shot, I am sure you will not regret it. It is R1899 at Takealot, but shop around for specials: http://www.takealot.com/leapfrog-epic/PLID40640425

Guide to install Amazon Appstore on the Leapfrog Epic: https://leapfrog.happyfox.com/kb/article/16-3212
You can also side-load APK files

She's 2.5 years. But I don't want to buy something short term and then have to replace it in a few years

I have not personally done it no, however I see there is a Youtube app on the Amazon appstore so it should be easy enough: https://www.amazon.com/youtube-com-YouTube/dp/B00I0GS2SS

If you want to I can see if I can install it tonight and give you feedback. I wonder if Netflix and Showmax will work on it... gona give it a shot tonight!

at 2.5 you will have to price in a replacement in the near future.
my 3 yr old is on his 3rd...

5 yr old and 3yr old sons both have their iPad 2 + iPad 3 , freaky how they know their way around these things but keeping adult items at bay is tricky.

They both watch lego building on youtube every single day and Peppa Pig.

Honestly do not buy a cheap Android tablet with those specs, you will be disappointed and your kid will never use it. Rather spend a bit more and get that Lenovo, my son has the Lenovo A7-50 and loves it, before that he had some chinese one (Pro something), thing we ended up selling to Cash Crusaders for R200.

How do you keep adult items on youtube at bay? I've removed youtube from boys' iPads due to swearing, etc.

Adult items on youtube are blocked by default, ain't it?, but ja don't think something like swearing can be blocked.
On another note, blocking content on the internet for children, on a normal windows PC something like K-9 web protection works wonders, and you cant bypass it.

For Android, something like this should work https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.parentycontrol&hl=en

@nadeem_k try to get a tablet with a quad core CPU, 1GB of RAM and 16GB storage minimum.

Anything less than that and Android will bump against those restrictions all the time. Not a great experience.

My 2.5yr old is on her second. Nexus 7 was the first, still works.... screen cracked(She jumped on it)
Asus fonepad now, will probably jump on that in due time.
