It is unavoidable that innocent civilians will get shot in the crossfire between police and criminals, Deputy Police Minister Fikile Mbalula said today, as he defended plans to give officers greater licence to use lethal force.

"In the course of any duty the innocent will be victimised," Mbalula told reporters in Parliament. "In this particular situation where you are caught in combat with criminals, innocent people are going to die not deliberately but in the exchange of fire. They are going to be caught on the wrong side, not deliberately but unavoidably."

He said there had always been collateral damage in the fight against crime and a recent spate of civilian deaths at police hands could not be blamed on the ministry's call for law enforcers to return fire when confronted with dangerous criminals.

"We cannot say to the police, retreat. We cannot say to South Africans, despair. Our job is to give people hope. Yes. Shoot the bastards. Hard-nut to crack, incorrigible bastards".

I'm starting to get concerned about this guy.

This is going to get out of hand.

What if there were 100 less murders,at the expense of 20 Innocent lives lost?

They can't even do their job with what they have at the moment giving them the right to use more lethal force will just worsen things.:D

**Three-year-old** Atlegang Phalane was shot dead in Midrand, near Johannesburg, as he sat in the back seat of a car next to his uncle.

The police officer is reported to have said that he thought the boy was carrying a firearm, though according to Moses Dlamini, from the Independent Complaints Directorate, no gun or object which could have been mistaken for a firearm was recovered from the car.

All I can say is WTF? I don't trust the police, sorry.

Same applies to the death penalty. I'm against it because I believe that, in this country, it will be abused by corrupt/incompetent police, judges and politicians.

If the police are being fired upon, of course they have the right to use deadly force and shoot back.

In the old days we applied the principle of minimum force. This meant that you had to response with the minimum force needed. Shooting an innocent person in a motorvehicle could hardly be regarded as minimum force! Idiots!:D

So when your bribe just isn't quite what they need to buy a 21 piece at KFC they can just pop a cap in yo a$$? Awesome! Love this country.

Sadly what he says is the truth, in times of war innocent people die.

It is time for shyte to get out control, criminals have run this country for long enough. The time to fight back has come. Shoot to kill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is just the start of it with these trigger happy idiots ...... and all those so for it, wait until your granny getting out of her car with groceries is seen as 'having a weapon' and shot dead and then see what your stupid stance is.

Well for me i hear people moaning about the crime rate, then they decide to get tough on criminals then the public moan about trigger happy cops.

Guess in SA you cannot win.

That same granny meph could be killed by criminals or am i wrong in saying criminals kill innocent people hourly? Guess we should just let them them continue running the country and not get tough, then at least one or two innocent lives will be saved while thousands die at the hands of criminals.

Accidents happen, it is human error and sadly we have one of the worst crime rates on the planet so i would also imagine the conditions our cops work in cannot be ideal. I would rather have them gunning down criminals daily and having the odd accident happen than letting the criminals continue to kill thousands of innocent SA citizens.

If the cops had higher IQ's than people who like T20 cricket, I wouldn't have a problem with it.
