Kindle eBook Prices

if it does become a issue you can pay the $30 to Amazon to un-ad it.

No you can't. As I posted above. I tried it. They told me you need a US credit card and US address. Else the remove ads doesn't even appear on your Amazon Manage Devices screen.

Have a look for yourself.

Weird - as I know for a fact you can't order it online and that they state on the Amaxon site, that the ad supported version is only for the US.
It is US only. But those companies import it here on their own (not VIA Amazon shipping). It'll work anywhere in roaming mode.

I personally got this information from the Kindle support site when I contacted them to try remove my ads (support VIA chat).

Example of US Kindle with ads in SA: http://www.takealot.com/imports/mor...k-display-includes-special-offers-,b005890g8y

Where else do they get it from though?
Is Amazon not the only places that ships it?

Thing is though - I don't want the ads.
I'll have to go into IC and see what its like for myself - otherwise I'll just fork out the extra $ and get it shipped from Amazon directly off the website. (wrt to the K4 anyway)

Does anyone know when the Touch and Fire will be shipping to here direct from Amazon?

Maybe the ad-supported models are reserved for the official retail channels in other countries?

What I mean is, they ship it to a US address (it qualifies for free shipping in the US). Then from there they arrange their own shipping to SA.

The ads aren't intrusive, it takes up 8% of the screen at the bottom of your Kindle menu and the screensaver (when you turn the device off) is also and ad. The ads aren't bad. It's usually a pretty girl with some small writing about a movie or show that is on "special offer".

If however you want to pay R500 more, then why not. TakeAlot has the best prices I think.
Touch: http://www.takealot.com/imports/usa?isearch=Kindle Touch
Keyboard & 4g: http://www.takealot.com/imports/usa?deptname=&isearch=Kindle+Keyboard

4g with ads can be had for R1k. Now that is a serious bargain :o

Ah, of course. Thanks

Are the ads present while reading though?
Its gonna catch my eye and irk me for sure.

Nope. Only in the menu (when you browse for books), takes about about 8-10% of the bottom of the screen. And the screensaver. No other place. I wanted to pay the cash to remove the ads but I've changed my mind. It isn't worth the R500 I'll need to pay.

Yeah, been looking around for pics of the ads and menus. Got some good pics off of Engadgets review and they don't seem as intrusive. For the sake of scrolling around the menus though. I can't see it being an issue.
The fact that they're grey imports though, is worrying.
Who is gonna be responsible for any issues that may arise wrt warranty?

The only way they aren't gray imports is if you order directly from Amazon. And in that case you'll have to return it to Amazon, at your own cost. I'd contact TakeALot and ask them what their policy is.

I know for a fact you cannot get the Touch here directly from Amazon because I tried ordering one. Then googled and found the Touch isn't being sold anywhere but the US (so it won't let you ship it here). (Have a look yourself, try get the touch on Amazon.co.uk VS .com).

If you were thinking of getting the Kindle 4g with Ads (~R1K) rather get the Kindle Touch with Ads (~R1.3k). The touch is worth the extra ~R300.

Forget the 3g. I got the 3g as a gift but if I had bought myself I wouldn't bother with 3g. 3g Kindle Touch costs R2K anyway.

Anyway if you want to avoid "grey market": http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wi-Fi-...pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1331999222&pf_rd_i=507846

Yeah, I'm not intersted in the 3G Keyboard version at all.
I've been in discussion about K4 vs K3G before (with ... one of the damned V's :p [ It was Voicy! :D ] we have here, Venomous, Velonoso...I forget :D and the K4 makes sense for my needs. To just read and copy books over via USB.
I don't know if I'd want the touch and a smearing screen filled with fingerprints though.

Yeah, I got mine as a gift and thought the same when I opened it. It doesn't smear tho. The screen is textured, kinda rough (when you touch it). So dirt doesn't adhere to it like it does on a phone.

Plus you don't touch nearly as much as a cellphone. Only if you want to lookup a word, do you touch on the word. Or you might drag if you want to highlight text. Next page/Previous page you can do by lightly touching the left or right side of the screen.

Depends on the person I guess. After having used my touch I won't get any other version but the touch. The interface is much more intuitive.

Well - will see how it plays out for me.
I was gonna get a kindle now, but opted to save up on some gear I need for my guitar and getaway next month.
So only getting a Kindle towards the end of Feb or maybe January :)

Got the normal 6" non touch and the keyboard isn't that bad considering you only use it once in awhile. Also the one from ic is not ad supported.

Yep. They're totally epic for reading - much better than books. Built in dictionary ftw too. The built in browser blows though, so don't bother with that.

Everyone should have one imo.

The cool thing is most of the texts that altered the course of history are already outside of copyright & hence free. Get the names over here:
http://www.penguin.co.uk/static/cs/uk/0/minisites/greatideas/index_1.html
And then grab them from gutenberg or amazon for free.

If the IC model is actually ad supported it makes their pricing even more ridiculous ... I'm pretty sure the demo ones I played with in the Kolonnade didn't show ads though.
